Chapter 15
Adeline looked at Sullivan in confusion. “Have you mistaken me for someone else, Mr. Carter? My name is Adeline Munte. Some people call me Addie.”
There was nothing he could do to her if she insisted on refusing to admit that she was Madeleine. After all, Madeleine had been officially categorized as deceased five years ago. Adeline was the only one who still existed in this world.
Sullivan didn’t expect her to react this way. Scoffing in anger, he snapped. “Adeline Monroe, huh? You’re an orphan who came to Chavelia five years ago to seek out your relatives.
“Yet, in the last five years, you’ve only interacted with one possible family figure who isn’t even from Chavelia and has never been here before. In other words, no one has ever met you! so–called relatives.
“Furthermore, you’ve had frequent contact with the Emersons of Arbington. Every six months, the Emersons would transfer a large sums of money to your bank account. Can you explain the reason for this, Ms. Monroe?
Adeline gulped.
Why would he have done such a thorough job of investigating her? He probably showed not even half the diligence he did now when he dated her, right? Now that she faked her death and changed her name, he was suddenly paying close attention to her new identity?
Teeling on edge and infuriated, she eyed him with hostility and declared, “Sir, we are complete strangers, I have nothing to do with you, and I don’t owe you anything. What gives you the right to investigate me? How is it any of your business why I came to Chavelia and who I have contact with?”
Her questions stumped Sullivan. For a moment, he didn’t know what to say.
- y. After a pause, he came up with an excurse.
“The Emersons have helped me before. Considering your suspicious behavior and the large sum of money you received from them, Thave every reason to suspect that you have ulterior motives.”
He thought that would suffice to put her at ease, but she merely eyed him doubtfully before retorting, “Even if I have ulterior motives, it should be the Emersons who get to question me. I don’t think you have any right to interfere, right?
“Who are you to question me? Are you here as a friend of the Emersons or as their deceased daughter’s sugar baby?”
The words “sugar baby stung Sullivan deeply. His eyes tumed red from anger. Pursing his lips, he gave Adeline one last look before leaving without another word. For some reason, the gloomy air that he exuded made Adeline feel a sense of loneliness emanating from him. Thinking that she had been a little too harsh, she opened her mouth, but in the end, she chose not to stop him from leaving.
In any case, Sullivan had always labeled their relationship as such, hadn’t he? He sold herself to him in exchange for money. He had made such comments countless times, so why did he have to act all pitiful to gamer her sympathy now?
Still, Adeline knew that since he had found her, he wouldn’t give up just because of what happened today
If she wanted a peaceful life, she needed To move.
Adeline felt sad to leave the lounge bar. It had been with her for five years now, but everything was ruined now that Sullivan showed up.
She went up to the front entrance. Afraid that Sullivan was still waiting outside, she decided against heading back to her place. Instead, she locked up the bar and went upstairs. Even as she got into bed, she couldn’t figure out why Sullivan was doing this.
Was he trying to seek revenge for the way she had used money to get him to be her boyfriend?
Well, hadn’t she already made it up to him? Plus, he had willingly agreed to the arrangement! It was a win–win situation. No matter how much he luted her, shouldn’t everything have ended the moment she was declared dead? Why did he have to track her down and come all the way here?
Since she couldn’t understand what was happening, she stopped dwelling on it and fell asleep.
Thee enough, Sullivan hadn’t left. His car remained parked outside the bar while he sat in the driver’s seat, staring bitterly at the steering wheel The words “gar baby” continued to ring in his ear. Was that all he was to her?
