Chapter 4
Ava was the manager who had been with Daphne since she debuted. Thus, Daphne could fully understand why Ava was so upset.
Daphne seemed like a celebrity who was loved by the netizens. But as she skyrocketed to fame, growing criticism began to appear.
Compared to those trained professionals with a privileged background and a range of talents, Daphne was an amateur from a rural background. Many people believed that her success was just by coincidence, and many critics were doubtful about her future prospects.
They mocked her for being tacky and lacked sophistication. The designer brand she wore would seem like clothing pieces from a bargain store. The more they doubted her, the more determined she was to prove her worth.
She had never begged Wilson before, but she dressed up nicely and visited him at a hotel where he was staying one day to beg for his help. Wilson rejected her without any hesitation. He told her Story’s previous ambassadors were all world-class celebrities, and she wasn’t one of them.
That was also when the paparazzi caught her entering the hotel with Wilson, which later exposed their relationship.
Since then, she had been surrounded by all kinds of rumors that said she got to the top with the help of some financial backers instead of her talent.
Wilson never bothered to clarify things for her.
He only told her that she didn’t have to care about what others were saying about her because they would know the truth as time passed.
Thus, Daphne diligently worked on controlling her facial expressions, maintaining her posture, and improving her conversational skills to make herself look more sophisticated.
Whenever she participated in a public event, she would dress in Story’s ready-to-wear collection, hoping that one day, she could get Story’s endorsement to prove the people who had looked down on her wrong.
Surprisingly, in the end, she was the one who embarrassed herself.
Refusing to read the comments any further, Daphne shut down the computer. “Let him do whatever he wants. That’s his own brand, after all. Even if Story’s image is ruined, it’s none of my business.”
“Still, how could he do that to you? You were married for seven years, but you never enjoyed the advantages of being Mrs. Farrell. You were criticized for so long instead, and Yvonne just came and snatched everything from you. Just what’s so good about her that makes her deserving of this?”
“Right…” Daphne mumbled to herself, recalling everything that had happened in her previous life. Then, she came to a conclusion. “Maybe it’s because… Wilson loves her.”
The moment Daphne finished her sentence, her assistant, Wendy Jones, rushed in with a grim expression. “Ms. Yeager, Mr. Farrell’s mother is here…”
Wilson’s mother, Leena Stone, disliked Daphne. If Wilson hadn’t insisted on marrying Daphne, Leena would never have acknowledged her position within the family.
As soon as she appeared, she landed a slap on Daphne’s face. “You wastrel! I asked you to watch over Wilson, didn’t I? Look at what you’ve done! He was so charmed by Yvonne that he gave her Story’s endorsement! You can’t even keep your own husband in check. Why do we even need you in the Farrells?”
Daphne was taken aback by the slap. She only returned to her senses after hearing Ava and Wendy gasp in surprise.
“How could you slap her?” Ava stood in front of Daphne, her voice trembling in anger. “Your son chose the brand ambassador on his own. Daphne didn’t even have a say in it! You should go and confront Wilson instead of harassing Daphne here!”
“My son always sticks to his own principles. Daphne failed to keep him in check, which led to Yvonne, that little vixen, finding a way to step into their relationship! Shouldn’t I be confronting Daphne in this case, then?”
When Leena saw the news this morning, she was so furious that she felt like tearing Daphne apart.
She didn’t dare to confront Wilson. She came to look for her daughter-in-law as a matter of course. Daphne had been like a punching bag to her for all these years.
To flatter Wilson, Daphne didn’t dare to oppose Leena in the past. When Leena refused to be taken care of by the nurses after her surgery and specifically requested Daphne to take care of her, Daphne carried out all the dirty work without any complaints.
But now, Daphne refused to put up with this old woman any longer.
A loud smack echoed in the room.
Daphne gave Leena a fiery slap in return. “Even my parents have never hit me. Just who are you to do so? Did you give birth to me, or did you raise me? What right do you have to lay your hands on me?
“Wilson is a living person. Do I have to look after him? He’s your son. Can’t you do so yourself?”
Leena clutched the swollen side of her face, glaring at Daphne in disbelief. “How dare you slap me in the face? You’ve crossed the line!”
She was going to strike back. Just then, Daphne retorted, “Listen, Wilson and I are divorced. I’ve been letting you have it your way previously because you were my mother-in-law. But from now on, I have nothing to do with you.
“If you’re looking for a punching bag to vent your anger, you can go to that little vixen your son has been keeping!”
“Wait, what? You got a divorce?” Leena was stunned.
“Yes, we’re divorced!” Daphne left no time for Leena to process the information. Immediately, she made a call to Wilson in front of Leena.
She initially wanted Wilson to bring Leena back, but to her surprise, Yvonne was the one who picked up the call.
“You’re divorced now, Ms. Yeager. Why are you still calling Mr. Farrell? The more you call him, the more he’ll get upset with you!”
Yvonne’s voice sounded as soft as usual. Perhaps because the day had finally come when Wilson was divorced, but she completely dropped her innocent façade.
“I want to talk to Wilson.” Daphne was suppressing her anger. She cast a glance at Ava and Wendy, who were stopping Leena from rushing over, and continued in a low voice, “Let him answer the call now if you don’t want me to regret my decision during the cooling-off period!”
Yvonne was silent for two seconds as if she was reluctant to the fact that Daphne was still ordering her around given the current circumstance. Thus, she replied sarcastically, “Give me a moment. He’s in the shower now. I’ll let him know.”
Moments later, Wilson picked up the call and asked impatiently, “What’s the matter now? We’re already divorced. Can you stop bothering me?”
“Your mom is throwing a fit in my company. Come pick her up if you don’t want to cause a huge scene.” She hung up the call as soon as she finished her sentence.
Fifteen minutes later, Wilson arrived with Yvonne following him.
Hugo Sanders, Daphne’s sleazy boss with a round face, rushed over when he heard that Wilson had arrived at his company.
“What’s with you, Daphne? You should’ve told me that Mr. Farrell was coming over!” Hugo poured Wilson a cup of tea sycophantically with a huge grin. “When did you arrive, Mr. Farrell? Are you here for Daphne?”
Wilson ignored him.
The arrival of her son gave Leena confidence. After raging about how she was to tear into Daphne just now, she regained her composure. She then asked in a refined tone, “What happened between you and Daphne, Wilson? Why did you get a divorce?”
Right, how did it come to this point?
Daphne couldn’t figure it out as well.
They did have their fair share of happy moments together.
Back when they had just gotten married, Wilson would always make time to visit Daphne on set no matter how busy he was. One time, she fell off the harness during a stunt. Wilson was so shocked that he abandoned a multi-million dollar project and flew back from abroad immediately, staying by her side and taking care of her.
All that felt like it had happened just yesterday.
And now, all the sweet memories in her mind had long been replaced by the bitter ones.
Things could never go back to how they were for them.
Then, Daphne let out a sneer sarcastically, “Isn’t it obvious?”
She looked at Yvonne, waiting for her to speak.
Yvonne then turned to Wilson, acting like a meek. “Mr. Farrell, I…”
Wilson felt his heart throb the moment he heard her whimper.
Caressing her face, Wilson held her hand and walked toward Leena. “Let’s not stay in touch with Daphne anymore, Mom. She and I no longer have anything to do with each other. My heart belongs to Yvonne now.”
