Chapter 74
The two kids looked at me nervously, too scared to come over
1 took two lollipops out of my bag, squatted down, and waved at them. The kids swallowed hand and slowly walked over. Then, they hesitated, looking at Jason
Jason nodded. “Remember, you shouldn’t take candy from strangers, but these lollipops are from Ms. Sutton. She’ll be with us for a month, helping out and having fun with you all!TM
The little girl with a limp took the candy and thanked me. “Thank you, miss!”
The boy beside her tightly held onto her and kept eyeing me wardly, especially when he saw Beanie
The girl spoke up, “Vincent can’t talk and he can’t hear.”
I paused for a moment and used sign language to communicate with the little boy named Vincent Miller, telling him that Beanie wouldn’t bite. He was a guide dog. Vincent looked surprised. He signed back, asking why Beanie was a guide dog
I replied in sign language, “Because I was blind before.”
Once he understood, Vincent’s caution eased a little. He took the candy and signed his thanks.co
John was shocked. He said, “I didn’t know you knew sign language.”
“I only know a little,” I replied,
“When I was a kid, I thought sign language was interesting when I saw it on TV, so I wanted to learn it. My parents told me that leaming it could help people who are dead and that it was a good thing to do, so I kept at it.”
John sighed. “Your parents must be really good people.”
I nodded, but i didn’t want to think too much about it. It wasn’t for any particular reason, just that the thought of my parents made me sad.
“Ms. Sutton’s parents are really land–hearted people!”
A soft, gentle voice interrupted.
I tumed to see a middle–aged woman who was dressed simply but wearing pearl earrings. She exuded a quiet grace.
H
“Mrs. Stone, what brings you here?” Jason immediately tumed into a bundle of enthusiasm.
One of the reasons I had come here was to see Mrs. Stone, so I recognized her right away.
Mrs. Stone was Yvette’s adoptive mother, the woman who had taken Yvette in after my parents sent her back to the orphanage.
Tumor had it that Mrs. Stone was a well–known philanthropist. But not many people knew she adopted verre.
Most people in Harborton thought Yvette was a biological child of the Stone family. The Stone family covered up the adoption, and from this, it was clear that Mrs. Stone was a very good mother.
“I came to look for these two kids Loverheard your conversation. I’m so surry…
“Mis–Stone, let me introduce you. This is Ms. Sutton, a volunteer at Sunshine Orphanage and a student from Harborton University. She comes to teach the children reading and math whenever she has time between classes and work”
“Wow! She’s a student from Harborton University!” Mrs. Stone’s eyes lit up with admiration. “You seem like such a smart, kind young woman. But what made you decide to volunteer at an orphanage?! Mrs. Stone asked.

Mrs. Stone smiled as she said, “We actually have a few dogs here that stay with the kids. Of course, you can leave yours with us, and we’ll take care of it for th

I nodded and followed her, leading Beaute along. Liled to stir a conversation by asking. “Do you often visit this orphanage, Mrs. Stone?”
