Chapter 73
Leonardo drove back around, and we soon picked up Beanie from a spot nearby.
The moment Beanie spotted me, its tail wagged furiously. Yet it whimpered softly as if pouring out all its grievances and asking why I had left it behind for so long Its big, tearful eyes locked onto mine, tugging at my heart.
leaned down and pressed my face against its head.
Leonardo, on the other hand, watched me through the rear–view mirror.
Pretending not to notice, I spoke up calmly, “Could you drop me off neat the subway station
sup ahead?”
“Is it really convenient to take the subway with a dog? Where are you headed? I can give you a litt. Hans Day, maybe?” he asked tentatively.
Hans Bay was where Gideon’s villa was and also where Leonardo’s parents lived. It surprised me that he remembered picking me up from there that moming “No need. The subway station is fine,” I replied flatly.
However, Leonardo wasn’t ready to drop the subject. “Whose place were you staying at in Hans Bay last night? He’s wealthy, isn’t he? Why did you help me out for a measly 5,000 dollars, then? Or is it just a line? He’s not looking for something serious, huh? Is he married?”
I frowned, irritated by the barrage of questions. Why was hes
suddenly so curious?
Still, it was clear that he didn’t know I had come from Gideon’s villa. If he had, he would have told Samuel about it earlier.
Before I could respond, Leonardo’s expression changed. He furrowed his brows, and his features hardened into something unreadable.
“Forget it. You don’t have to answer. It’s your life, so do whatever you want. Even if it’s a dead end, that’s on you. After all, people have to live with the consequences of their mistakes.”
I couldn’t be bothered about his sudden mood swings. But the irony in his words was almost laughable.
They had targeted me and my family, all because Yvette claimed I pushed her into the road when we were kids. Accordin sent her back to the orphanage, where she supposedly endured endless suffering.
According to her, my parents abandoned her and
I had no memory of such a thing happening–Besides, my parents weren’t the kind of people who would take in a child, only to abandon them later. Hence, I didn’t buy their accusations or Yvette’s version of the story.
In the end, Leonardo dropped me off at the subway station nearby.
The moment I stepped out with Beanie, he sped off. It was as though he were fleeing. Or maybe he just couldn’t stand being around me any longer
Gripping Beanie’s leash, I turned and walked into the station.
Thanks to Beanie being a guide dog, the subway ride went smoothly. Afterward, I hailed a cab and headed to Sunshine Orphanage.
A short, middle–aged man stood waiting at the entrance. His face lit up with joy when he saw me, and he hurried over, calling out, “Jules?” “Yes, it’s me,” I replied. “Mr. Lewis?”

Jason Lewis‘ grin widened. “That’s right! This time, we’ll need your help for about a month. If your university recommendation, we’ll gladly provide one.”
He was probably worried I might refuse, so he quickly offered reassurance.
“okay, I’ll let you know if I need anything.
Jason let out a sigh and continued, “A lot is going on this month. We’ve got sponsored activities, and we’re starting construction on a new facility. But we’re seriously short on volunteers. There just aren’t many people willing to work for free these days.”
He wasn’t wrong. Few people were willing to give up one or two months of their time to work for no pay.
The orphanage couldn’t afford to hire staff. So, without volunteers, there was no one to care for the children.
Jason continued to vent while I listened patiently
When we reached the main building, he chuckled awkwardly. “I’ve been rambling, huh?”
“No, it’s line I don’t mind listening,” Lanswered.
Right then, I noticed two children peeling out from the conser of the building. They appeared to be around eight years old. One stared intently while the other walked with a slight limp. It was likely due to a congenital condition
Most of the children here had some kind of illness. The healthler ones were usually adopted quickly–just like Yvette had been
