Chapter 28
Amelia watched me carefully, seemingly worried I might refuse the food.
I lifted my spoon and ate the eggplant. “It’s delicious. Thank you.”
I’m glad you like it!” Amelia smiled warmly.
Just then, my roommates started chatting about an upcoming event–a charity drive to collect donations and personally deliver the goods to underserved communities.
“I heard Leonardo Gibson is attending. Is that true?”
“Not just him. Apparently, he’s bringing his girlfriend along. She’s supposed to be gorgeous and kind, a real beauty. I think her name is something like Yvette?”
The weight of my spoon suddenly felt heavier. I silently put the piece of chicken into my mouth.
The woman they mentioned was, of course, Yvette Stone.
Yvette had always had a circle of outstanding admiters. Aside from Samuel, there were two others, one of whom was Leonardo Gibson.
Leonardo, the president of Harborton University’s student council, was interning at his family’s Gibson Group. His future as the head of the company was practically set in stone.
Some people were born winners, starting life miles ahead of others. Leonardo was so exceptional that rumors painted him as someone who looked down on everyone else. Yet he didn’t realize that the woman he doted on–Yvette–only had eyes for someone even more remarkable–Gideon Jackman
This charity event was just another opportunity to polish Leonard’s already shining reputation.
Ironically, Leonardo wasn’t just someone who contributed to Yvette’s high position on the pedestal. He was also among those who had terrorized me in my previous life. He used cars to intimidate me, pretended to run me over, and even played a role in the incident where I fell off the cliff.
In my previous life, I had already dropped out of university when this charity event occurred, but I still ended up participating.
Samuel had insisted, saying, “You’re blind. It’ll make the event seem more authentic. Yvette is doing a good deed here, so you have to help.”
Even after the scandal with the compromising photos, he took me to the charity drive without telling me where we were going. Being blind, I couldn’t recognize the surroundings, but I felt out of place. I was uncomfortable with the strange atmosphere.
It wasn’t until I rabo Amelia that I learned I was back at Harborton University Her surprised
question—“Are you back at university?“–shattered all my illusions.
That day. IDed in a panic like a rat scurrying through the streets
st then my phone buzzed with a message from an unfamiliar number. The phone’s accessibility feature read it aloud for me
I could bear Samuels voice in my head
TOE versity is organing a charity event. Yvette asked if you could help out”
heated before replying with a voice message. Why me?”
Samuel’s reply was swift Events like this lack authenticity. If a disabled person participates, it’ll add credibility and help raise more funds. Helping your kind is a way of doing good deeds. You’re not allowed to refuse
His voice echoed through the dormitory, leaving the room in stunned silence.
It wasn’t hard to tell how condescending his words were, no matter how polite they sounded on the surface. Who would want their vulnerability paraded for others to see?
I asked, “Does Leonardo know about this? Did he approve?”
Samuel responded, “Of course, Leonardo supports it. What does his opinion matter to you? Does it really make a difference?”
The text–to–speech feature stripped the words of emotions, but I could sense from the phrasing that Samuel was irritated
Why? Perhaps he was worried that Leonardo might outshine him and win Yvette’s heart first.
Leaning closer to my phone, I replied softly, “I refuse.”
Then, I blocked Samuel’s new number without hesitation
