Chapter 4
I used the money I earned from all kinds of part–time jobs and four years of my youth to make him the most popular guy on campus,
Grace was the girl my husband loved during his college days,
ris was the gentle senior from the Law School, and Grace was the school beauty beck Back
then, some people even shipped them as a couple,
After all, he was handsome and she was beautiful; they were a perfect match made in
heaven.
Kris often mentioned Grace in front of me, saying,
“Grace comes from such a good family, and she’s intelligent and beautiful, I wonder who
the lucky one will marriage her.”
I’d always feel jealous and tease him back then, saying,
“If you think she’s so great, why don’t you go for her?”
Upon hearing this, Kris would shake his head, affectionately saying, “Grace is different from you. With such a good background, she’ll go abroad for further study someday, How could I possibly catch up with her? Besides, I need you, Winne, to earn money and support me, don’t I?”
I used to be delighted by his words, for being able to support him meant that I was valuable and worthy of his love,
But after so many years, I’m still no match for Grace, When I needed Kris the most, he only thought of Grace.
After graduation, Kris aimed to enter the most prestigious law firm for further studies. To support him, I chose to deliver food, which indeed paid more,
Some classmates advised me not to push myself too hard, saying that even though my major job might not pay as much, sitting in an office would be easier than enduring the sun

and wind every day,
But I was driven solely by my love for Kris back then. How could such an outstanding person settle for being a mere assistant in an unknown law firm?
So, I had to save as much money as possible to give him more confidence.
In recent years, Kris’s work has been busy, but he’s been promoted rapidly. He passed the
bar exam in his second year and is now a full–fledged lawyer at the firm.
However, due to his busy schedule, even though we live in the same house, we barely see
each other, and our relationship has gradually grown distant.
Until today, I haven’t had a proper conversation with him for a long time.
Just as I finished reminiscing, my phone rang. My old phone, surprisingly still hanging on
after the car accident.
The shattered screen displayed an unfamiliar number.
I answered the call, and the voice on the other end was unexpectedly familiar.
“Hello, this is Kris, Ms. Grace’s attorney.”
Kris’s professional opening was polite yet distant. He didn’t even realize it was his wife’s
number.
After seven years together, I know everything about Kris, but he never remembers anything
about me.
Perhaps he never needed to call me proactively because I always took care of everything
for him.
“Kris, it’s me, Winne!”
