Chapter 25
Matthew turned livid when he heard the accusations of his rivals in love.
He completely ignored Rhea, who was standing not far away. Blushing, he angrily said, “Nonsense! Rhea is like a sister to me! Nothing is going on between us, and there never will be! Mabel is my only fiancée! Give up already. I’m with her. She’ll never be interested in any of you!”
“Shut up.” Mabel looked at him like he was a piece of trash. Then she said word by word, her expression cold, “You disgust
me.”
Matthew felt guilty in an instant. A bit pissed off, he glared at Rhea, wondering if she had said something inappropriate to Mabel. Or how come Mabel resented him so quickly?
Since Rhea had been staring at him, she noticed his look, of course. With tears in her eyes, she walked over. “Mabel, Matthew loves you so much. How could say that to him? He’s right. Nothing is going on between us… If you want to vent your anger, come at me. Please don’t get Matthew wrong.”
She was, in fact, reluctant to say this. As she could tell Matthew cared about Mabel a lot, she knew if Mabel had a fallout with him, he’d definitely take it out on her.
So, she figured that instead of competing with Mabel, she might as well do Matthew a favor; it could also show him how considerate she was and how unreasonable Mabel was.
Her words made Matthew feel relieved instantly, and he looked at Mabel with great expectations. “You heard Rhea, Mabel. Even she says that. You’ll believe me now, won’t you? I mean, come on. We’re getting engaged. I swear you’re the only one I love.”
The expression on Mabel’s face said it all. She was simply disdainful when looking at the shameless couple.
“Save your breath, Matthew. I admit that I’ve had feelings for you before, but that was all gone long ago. Forget about the engagement. It’s not going to happen. From now on, you and I will be strangers. Don’t show up in front of me again. Did you hear me?”
Her words were like a slap in his face, turning him ashen–faced in a second.
Noticing Matthew was at a disadvantage, Aileen strode over angrily.
She thought, ‘What the fuck? I’ve always despised Mabel, and I don’t think she deserves to be my daughter–in–law at all.. She’s got some nerve trying to dump Matthew and humiliate him in front of so many people. What a bitch!‘
The sight of Aileen’s hideous face reminded Mabel of how stupid she used to be. To please Aileen, she did everything, willing to be bossed around by Aileen.
She had a bone to pick with Aileen, and Aileen happened to give her such a chance.
Aileen walked to Mabel, accusing her while glaring at her, “Well, well. You’ve got some nerve today to dump Matthew in public. I’ve been treating you with too much respect, haven’t I?”
Noticing Aileen’s domineering posture, Matthew knew she was going to make things worse. He pulled her back at once and whispered, frowning, “Mom, what did I say? Stay out of things between me and her.”
“Stay out of things? And she wants to be my future daughter–in–law? No way!”
Aileen raised her voice, practically shouting at the top of her lungs. “Marthew, wake up! Can’t you see she’s playing hard–to-
ting Mabel to hear their conversation,
get?”
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Matthew whispered, “Keep it down! Don’t upset her again…”

Instead, Aileen said even louder, “Why are you afraid of her? Think about it. She was practically glued to you before, doing everything as you pleased. She loves you so much, OK? No way she’s ever going to cancel the engagement! Besides, she’s just the Harper family’s adopted daughter, and she’s gone all out just to marry into our family. Not in a million years will I believe she wants to call off the engagement!”
Her angry speech vented Rhea’s anger, and she felt great.
But she was the only one who felt that way. Other onlookers found Aileen’s words unbelievable, as the dress on Mabel alone was worth 600 million dollars. Why would she want to cling to the Preston family?
Mabel looked at Aileen as if the latter were a clown. “Mrs. Preston, have some self–knowledge. I’m way out of Matthew’s league, and he’s the one who’s been glued to me. You know what? You think he’s so precious, but you’re wrong. I can find plenty of gigolos who are better looking than him.”
She was always obedient when around Aileen, and her arrogant demeanor today pissed Aileen off so much that Aileen felt. she was going to have a heart attack. Pointing at Mabel, she scolded angrily, her voice shaking, “You… I’m warning you, Mabel! Don’t go too far! You’re straining my patience! You better apologize to me now, or over my dead body will I let you marry Matthew!”
Mabel couldn’t help but start to wonder, ‘Like mother like son indeed. What’s wrong with Aileen and Matthew? Are my words that hard to understand?
‘Aileen has always despised me, thinking I’m not good enough for Matthew. After I made it clear that I’m not interested in him and won’t be engaged to him, she somehow won’t leave me alone!
Noticing Mabel’s silence, Aileen thought Mabel was intimidated by her aura. She said, holding her head high, “Be clear. Women are lining up to marry Matthew, and many of them are way richer and prettier than you. Be grateful Matthew is interested in you, and stop acting willfully! If you want to be my daughter–in–law, do as I say! For starters, don’t wear such flamboyant clothes again. I’ll keep these revealing clothes for you, including this dress you’re wearing!”
She wanted the dress, which was worth 600 million dollars.
What she was thinking was so clear to all.
Without hesitation, Mabel retorted, “Mrs. Preston, are you deaf? Didn’t you hear what I said? Feel free to let Matthew marry- anyone else. Stay out of my way. Also, I get to decide what I wear, and it’s none of your business. Understand?”
Being sandwiched, Matthew was in a dilemma. He thought, I knew it! Mom’s just going to make things worse. I want to get engaged to Mabel as soon as possible. How is that going to happen now that Mom has made a great scene and upset Mabel
even more?‘
Ignoring the sullen look on Matthew’s face, Aileen pointed at Mabel exasperatedly. “Wait and see! I know you’re just acting tough. I swear you’re going to regret this!”
With that, she dragged Matthew angrily away.
Seeing how furious Aileen was, Rhea was overjoyed. She was certain that Aileen was so pleased with her after seeing her today, which was the reason why Aileen fell out with Mabel so eagerly. She would soon be Aileen’s daughter–in–law!
With such a thought, she came forward, beaming. Taking Aileen’s arm with a look of affection, she said gently, “Mrs. Preston, don’t take it to heart. That’s the kind of person Mabel is. Let me.
The second Aileen saw Rhea, those photos of her from earlier came back to Aileen at once. She found Rhea even more disgusting than Mabel and instantly pushed Rhea away. “Piss off
Caught off guard, Rhea stumbled, dumbfounded.
