Chapter 19
A week later, the Daltons threw a grand banquet, inviting every influential person in Greendale.
At the banquet, Christopher and Anna announced that Ruby was the Dalton family’s long–lost daughter and that they had willed half of their assets to her
“From today onward, Ruby is the heir to the Dalton family,” Christopher said with emotion. “For the rest of our lives, we’ll be trying to make things up to her and give her the best
life that we can.”
Applause broke out among the guests. Everyone’s attention was on Ruby, they looked at her with envy.
Standing below the stage, Ruby gazed at the other guests frostily, unmoved.
At that moment, lan stepped forward and handed her a key.
**Ruby, this is the key to my castle in New Seaville. I’m giving it to you,” he said, his voice dripping with anticipation. “I’ve planted your favorite roses there. I hope you’lki‘
Ruby took the key with an indifferent look, slipping it into her bag,
Then, Henry stepped forward. He got down on one knee and raised a ring into the air, gazing at her passionately.
“Ruby, will you marry me?” he asked tremblingly. “I promise I’ll make amends for the rest of your life with my deepest love.”
Gasps broke out among the crowd. Everyone was stunned by this scene.
Looking at him coolly, she asked sarcastically, “Henry, didn’t you like Cecelia in the past? So why are you proposing to me now?
Henry’s face turned pale. Flustered, he said, “Ruby, I–I just saw her as a substitute for my love… The woman I truly love has always been you…”
Ruby chuckled frostily. “If that’s the case, isn’t your love too cheap?” she asked mockingly.
The crowd immediately fell silent, shocked by what they’d just witnessed.
However, the haughty son of the Spencer family didn’t even get mad after getting humiliated publicly.
Pain flickered in his eyes. He said quietly, “Ruby, you can say whatever you want so long as it makes you happy. I know that you might not accept my proposal now, but I will keep trying. I hope you’ll give me the chance to take care of you.”
Ruby didn’t give him an answer. Instead, she turned around and walked off.
The banquet came to a close, and the Daltons went home in the same car as Ruby.
The entire way, Christopher, Anna, and Ian kept probing her about how she was feeling. They carefully observed her expressions, worried that she might be upset.
Ruby maintained a frigid expression the entire time and didn’t say much.
At that moment, the car suddenly broke down..
“What’s the matter?” lan asked with annoyance, wrinkling his brow.
The driver quickly got down to check. After a moment, he returned and said, “Mr. Dalton, there’s a problem with the car. It needs to be repaired.”
Ian’s face instantly darkened. He turned toward Ruby and said apologetically, “Ruby, you should take the other car home. I don’t want you to get wet in the rain.”
Ruby nodded then followed the driver into the other car.
However, not long after the car took off, a wave of dizziness hit Ruby.
Before she could react, her vision turned black, and she lost consciousness.
When she regained consciousness, she found herself tied to a chair. She was in a warehouse, surrounded by darkness.
Her hands and feet were tightly bound, and her mouth was taped. She couldn’t move.
At that moment, the door to the warehouse opened.
A farmer figure walked in, wearing a gloating smile.
“Ruby, I bet you never thought you’d end up here one day.”
Ruby coolly watched the person walk in without a hint of terror in her eyes.
It was none other than Cecelia
