Chapter 41
Daphne couldn’t help but worry about Ellie. She wasn’t sure it her daughter was alone or if the female officer was still with her.
For some reason, a male officer had brought her breakfast–milk and sandwiches. She seized the opportunity to ask about Ellie and was relieved to hear that the female officer from last night was still with her daughter..
After a quick breakfast, the male officer came to inform Daphne that she could leave.
She was shocked.
That was it? They weren’t going to check her identity again?
Daphne immediately went to find Ellie and was relieved to see her sleeping soundly in the female officer’s arms.
As the officer handed Ellie over, she praised her repeatedly–how well–behaved and sweet she was,
According to the male officer, Hector had already been convicted of theft, and several witnesses were testifying against him.
Theft was one thing, but weren’t they supposed to be more thorough when verifying her identity? They had even suspected she might be a foreign spy, yet now they were letting her go?
Then, she saw the signature on the paperwork–Lester Waltzan.
Her composure slipped. It dawned on her that he had settled this for her.
Daphne looked around but saw no sign of him.
How embarrassing. She had walked away so decisively, yet when trouble came locking, it was her ex–boyfriend who had to step in. It nothing else, at least he wasn’t there to see her like that.
“Ms. Miller, your identity has been verified,” the officer said: “Due to a management oversight, your identification code wasn’t issued on time. You’ll receive it via text within two hours. Please ensure your name is properly validated from now on.”
Got it. Thank you.”
With Ellie in her arms, Daphne finally left the police station. Her day had been an emotional rollercoaster.
Alas, the was still indebted to Lester.
Lucien returned home before traphne and transformed back into as “puppy” tom to avoid raising suspicion.
Right before she reached home, Daphne received the identification code. Following the instructions, she successfully replaced the deceased Britney’s identity with her DWTL
The screen displayed her new information.
Name: Daphne Miller
Race. Apelin
Age: 500
It must have been a hassle for Lester to arrange this. Apekin looked almost indistinguishable from humans. As for their age, she had heard that Beastkin weren’t considered adults until they reached 500.
The moment she opened the door, she found Lucien curled up in his bed, fast asleep. Tig ungrateful mutt–how could he still be sleeping?
Ellie had been fed soms nutritional supplements at the station. After a restlessnight, she quickly darted off once they got home.
As for Lucien… Dapline caught him staring at her with those plaiful eyes, She immediately added a few more scoops of dog food to his bowl. “Thanks for guarding the houpe last night. Eat up and recharge.”
Luden thought to himself, “I don’t even like dog food… but the treats you make are pretty good. Give me some of those.”
To Daphne, he was just barking, she had no idea what he wanted until he started pawing at the kitchen door.
That was when she remembered while making Ellie’s baby food, Dapline had tumed some leftover scraps into deg treats.
