Chapter 4
Benjamin was still furious, but Jensen, feeling a bit guilty, held him back and softened his
tone.
“Forget it. I acted impulsively. Don’t take it to heart. When I come back, I’ll bring you your favorite chocolate cake.”
“But there’s one thing you have to promise me: don’t trouble Maya anymore.”
One slap and a promise of a chocolate cake. But he’d forgotten–I have a stomach condition and can’t eat chocolate. Back then, Jensen went through countless chefs, never satisfied with the meals they made for me. In the end, he had to stay up late researching and personally created a medicinal diet plan just for me. Benjamin, too, tirelessly supervised me every day, making sure I followed it strictly. Now, they’d both forgotten.
A cold gust swept over me, the chill seeping from my heart and spreading through my entire body. I shivered, only now noticing my wet clothes that I hadn’t yet changed–no doubt I was coming down with a fever. As I struggled with the discomfort, Benjamin
brushed past me, muttering,
“Still putting on an act.”
My legs finally gave out, and I collapsed into the muddy ground. Jensen glanced back, a hint of hesitation in his eyes. But ultimately, he and Benjamin walked away on either side of Maya, shielding her as they left.
After struggling for a long time, I managed to drag myself out and called for an ambulance.
The doctor, upon seeing me in this state, scolded me furiously.
“Just out of the hospital, and you’re already like this?”
“Do you have any idea about your own condition? It’s like you have a death wish!”
I didn’t argue, obediently staying for a few days under observation. Only after the fever had fully subsided did the doctor finally discharge me. With so much time lost, I had to move quickly with my remaining plans.
I went back to the company to complete my resignation paperwork, hoping to say goodbye to some colleagues I’d been close to. But I discovered that Maya had already fired them. The
remaining staff treated me like the plague, avoiding me entirely. I waited outside the company for most of the day, only to be told that Jensen had gone on a trip with Maya.
They’d gone to the beach I’d loved as a child and visited places I had always wanted to see but never had the chance to. I let out a bitter laugh and tossed my resignation letter in the trash. I’d been worrying over how to explain things, but it turned out no one even cared about my presence.
Now, all that remained was to say a final goodbye to Mrs. Miller. Then, I could leave without any lingering attachments.
