Chapter 19
“Get a grip, Joseph! All you do every day is spend money researching some system. If you keep this up, the family business won’t survive your nonsense!” Logan Cunningham, Joseph’s father, couldn’t stand to watch him any longer.
“Yeah, with the way things are now, we really should be making connections to try and resolve the crisis,” Joseph’s mother, Natalie Blanchard, said.
“The Decker family and the Gill family, who’ve been developing overseas, are back in the country for a wedding and have sent us an invitation. This could be a chance for you to network with them.”
Natalie placed an invitation in front of Joseph.
After a brief glance at the invitation, a flicker of anger quickly crossed his otherwise expressionless face.
“The bride’s name is Evangeline Decker? This won’t do. She has the same name as my wife! Make her change it. She’s not worthy!”
Logan was about to burst out laughing out of anger. “Not worthy? She’s the only daughter of the wealthy Decker family! If I had the luck to have such a daughter–in–law, I’d be grinning in my sleep! Too bad you don’t have that kind of luck.”
But Joseph stubbornly insisted, “No one can compare to my wife!”
Logan and Natalie were both speechless. Though Joseph’s wife shared the same name as this other Evangeline, her background didn’t measure up at all.
On top of that, she had never supported Cunningham Group when she was alive. And now, after her death, Joseph became obsessed with her.
The entire company was on the verge of collapse due to Joseph’s actions.
“I don’t care about your opinion, Joseph. You need to go!” Logan raised his voice in a final ultimatum. “If you keep disregarding the family business like this, I’ll have no choice but to step back in and take over! Do you understand?”
Natalie added helplessly, “Listen to your dad, Joseph. We’re doing this for your own good. Think about it.”
After doing everything they could, Logan and Natalie sighed and left.
But Joseph seemed not to hear a word of it. He casually tossed the invitation aside. His mind was consumed with thoughts of contacting the system and finding Evangeline, The system had promised to help him, so he was waiting eagerly for results.
Back in this world, Evangeline couldn’t help but think about the unpleasant past. Thankfully, her family and Sterling were by her side, offering comfort and alleviating her unease. Evangeline loved sports, so Sterling accompanied her on a hike.
At the summit, they stood in the breeze, gazing at the beautiful scenery below. After watching the sunset, Evangeline felt her mood lift.
She and Sterling laughed and talked as they made their way down the mountain.
Meanwhile, halfway up the mountain, Antoine, who had just finished praying, froze in his tracks.
He saw Evangeline, the woman he had indirectly caused to die!
After that incident, he often had nightmares. In them, he would see Evangeline covered in blood and her eyes filled with tears of blood. She demanded to know why he had tricked her into the private room and falsely accused her.
Antoine was already terrified, but Joseph made the situation worse by placing the ice coffin in the house. Every time Antoine went to report work, he was filled with fear.
That was why he had turned to religion, praying for Evangeline’s spirit to leave him in peace. He never imagined that one day, he would see her alive again.
Antoine stared in disbelief. He thought it must be a coincidence, that this woman couldn’t possibly be Evangeline.
But the more he looked, the more certain he became. That was her.
He even heard the man beside her call her Eva.
How could it be a coincidence that they both had the same name? How could she have the same name and look so much like Evangeline?
Only when Evangeline and Sterling were out of sight did Antoine realize that his legs were shaking,
Feeling uneasy, he returned home, but his nightmares tormented him throughout the night. Finally, after much hesitation, he decided to tell Joseph.
“You saw someone who looks exactly like Eva, and the man beside her called her Eva?” Joseph asked, his voice filled with agitation.
He suddenly remembered the invitation. Could it be…
Despite the temperature in the living room being freezing cold, the thought of Evangeline possibly returning made his heart burn with heat.
The invitation was set for a week later at the Decker residence.
Without hesitation, Joseph prepared to leave. He had to confirm if that was really his Evangeline. If it was, he would do whatever it took to win her back. He wouldn’t let her marry someone
