Chapter 14
“Joseph, it doesn’t matter if you hate me. It’s your hardest time right now. Let me stay by your side, please?” Evelyn changed her approach, speaking in the softest tone.
But Joseph only gave her a cold glance before waving his hand dismissively. “Get her out.”
The household staff immediately moved to escort Evelyn out. They practically threw her out the door.
“Mr. Cunningham, the temperature is so low. Do you want to wear more clothes?”
“Yeah, you could catch a cold. Your body won’t handle it.”
The staff, already bundled in thick down coats, couldn’t help but urge Joseph to take care of himself. But he impatiently snapped at them to be quiet.
Finally, one of the household staff spoke up, “Even if you’re not cold, Mrs. Cunningham will be. How about you both put on more clothes?”
Joseph finally seemed to consider it.
“You’re right. Eva is dressed too lightly. She’ll definitely be cold. Contact her favorite brand and have them send over the latest winter clothes. I’ll personally pick the most beautiful ones for her to wear.”
So, Joseph spent the next several hours dressing the body in the ice coffin in the outfit he deemed most fitting. Only then did he bother to put on his own thick clothing.
The household staff, seeing him sitting unmoving before the ice coffin, again suggested, “Mrs. Cunningham would feel heartbroken seeing you like this. Why don’t you rest for a while?”
Joseph immediately stood up. “Don’t worry about me, Eva. I’ll listen to you. I’ll rest now.
The staff exchanged stunned glances. They now understood that Evangeline’s words held more power than anything.
It was strange. Joseph hadn’t cared much about her before. But now, with her gone, he seemed to be completely devoted.
The next morning, Joseph instructed Antoine to announce on the official website that he and Evangeline had been married for a long time.
“Make sure to state clearly that Eva is my one and only love, my true wife. Also, do a lottery giveaway to spread the news. I want everyone to know that Eva belongs to me,” Joseph meticulously instructed.
Soon, public opinion flipped.
Evelyn, once admired, was now under suspicion of being the third party who ruined Joseph’s marriage with Evangeline and was blacklisted by the entertainment industry. Joseph smiled with satisfaction. “Did you see that, Eva? I’ve set things right for you.”
Then he busied himself again.
He went to the east side of the city to buy Evangeline’s favorite shortbread cookies and to the west side for her favorite mushroom soup.
He even ordered a large collection of seasonal limited–edition jewelry, bags, and shoes. All of it was piled in front of the ice coffin.
“Eva, do you smell that? Isn’t it nice? Come on. Eat a little, please.
“And look at these. They’re all perfect for you. Could you try them on for me?
“Eva, just look at me. Just one glance, please?”
Joseph called out tirelessly, but there was no response from the body in the ice coffin.
His emotions slowly began to break down, shifting into desperate regret,
“Eva, I know I gave all your resources to Evelyn, but after everything settles, I’ll make it up to you with even more. I never meant to hurt you. When your parents told you to eat bugs, I pretended to agree, but it was just to scare you.
“When you asked to exchange properties for your script, I agreed so quickly, not for Evelyn, but because you could have whatever you wanted.
“You always think I’m distant, that I won’t even let you touch my phone. But the truth is, I’ve already changed the password to your birthday. I’m sorry, Eva. Please open your eyes. I’m begging you.”
Joseph’s emotions were completely unraveling. He collapsed, sobbing as he reached out to push the ice coffin. “If you won’t get up, then I’ll stay with you. We can’t be apart.” “Mr. Cunningharn…” One of the staff entered holding a package.
“Get out! Don’t bother me. Don’t use Eva’s name to pressure me. She would want me to be with her!” Joseph roared like a beast on the brink of collapse.
“But… there’s a package for Mrs. Cunningham.”
Upon hearing that, Joseph rushed over and snatched the package out of her hands.
