Once everyone had left, Lucas and Mary finally sat down. Mary looked tired.
Jean poured her a glass of water. “Grandina, have some water to calm down.”
Lucas shook his head at her. “You’re always tough at home and tough with me. But as soon as you’re outside, around your maternal family, you become a pushover.”
Jean chimed in. “Yeah, Grandma, don’t be so down.”
Mary sighed. “But they’re my family. How could I not care? They re my real brother and sister–in–law. I’ve got a tough spot too. Cherise has quite a temper too.”
Jean’s eyes widened at the words, “Grandma, it’s not fair for you to speak like that about Cherise. I admit I also misunderstood her at first and thought she wasn’t sensible. But when things shifted, it was like a wake–up call, a real eye-
opener.
“She’s truly impressive and cool, no airs about her, way better than most women.”
Lucas nodded in agreement. “Jean’s right. Cherise is quite a special person. I am so fond of her. It’s rare to see such a free- spirited and generous woman.
“She’s remarkable. Morris is lucky the heavens finally smiled at him. The Quinton family, the less contact the better. For so many years, they’ve treated you like a fool and have gained enough benefits.”
Mary pressed her lips together, muttering under her breath, clearly unhappy with the tension between her natal and marital families, “Humph! All you care about is that person.”
Lucas didn’t hear it clearly. “What are you mumbling about?”
Mary said, “Nothing. Fll be more careful. Alice can be tough, but she’s still my sister–in–law. I’ll talk to Matthew about it later/ I’m aware of the rest. I’m caught in the middle, so I’ll tread lightly.”
Lucas and Jean shared a glance, shook their heads, and remained silent.
What happened at the Jarrett residence had no impact on Cherise. For the rest of the holiday, she ate and drank in peace, feeling pretty relaxed.
Today, she hung out with a couple of friends. Tomorrow, she was with Morris, enjoying their romance, and the day after, she was off to Carson’s island to study and play with the cute animal Life had been a real treat
But then, the other day, Amy’s father got fired for neglecting his duties And Alice was grounded at home by Matthew after her notorious incident at the Jarrett residence.
On the last day of the holiday. Nolan and Hannia dropped by to see Morris and Cherise. Not wanting to intrude, they stayed just long enough to chat before making moves to leave.
Before leaving, Hannia tugged on Cherise’s arm, saying, “Ever since you helped me remove that cursed worm, I’ve felt incredible, like a weight’s been lifted and I’m worry–free! You’re amazing. You seem to know everything.
Nolan chimed in, “Of course, She’s my junior.”
Hannia rolled her eyes at him. “You are so smug. Even Mr. Chivers isn’t boasting like that.
Cherise glanced at Morris and found him quite calm. She held as hand with a smile and said to Hannia, “School starts in a

week, so try not to wander around.”
There might be some trouble in the Hawkins family lately.
Hannia understood what Cherise meant, nodded, and said, “Got it. Don’t worry.”
They waved goodbye to each other, and then Nolan’s car drove out of Chivers Residence.
Cherise and Morris still held their hands tightly together. “Mr. Chivers, come on. Teach me how to cook! I’m hungry,” Cherise said softly, her hands tightly clasped together.
Morris chuckled, “Hmm? I can cook for you. Why the sudden interest in learning to cook?”
“Come on. Just teach me. You’re such a great cook. I want to learn. I want to learn so I can cook for you.” Cherise said playfully, nudging Morris’s shoulder.
This trick always worked on Morris, melting his heart. “Alright, let’s get you cooking.”
It was Christmas, a time of joy for many, but not at the Hawkins residence.
After the first couple of days with many visitors, the Hawkins family locked up their house for the rest of the week, leaving many friends and relatives who had come to offer their good wishes shut out.
“What’s going on with the Hawkins family?”
“On Christmas, why would the Hawkins family shut their doors? There’s no news of anything bad happening to them.” “It’s really not festive at all. Usually, their house is bustling on Christmas, but today, even the side gate is shut.”
“What a bummer. Let’s just get out of here.”
Nobody knew what happened to the Hawkins family, not even the servants would talk. It was only known that apart from the first couple of days, the Hawkins residence had been locked up since then.
