Chapter 9 What Will Happen If You Could Stand
Sofia stood silently by, feeling utterly speechless about how things had unfolded.
Initially, she had asked Older Mr. Hart for help, intending to assist in Nathaniel’s care under the guise of being a doctor, simply to make it easier for herself to eventually treat him.
But now, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Nathaniel was setting a trap for her, trying to lure her into something.
Great. She had just told Nathaniel that she was an ordinary doctor with mediocre skills.
If she managed to cure him, would he still let her go?
She had originally planned to secretly treat him and then credit the miracle to the highly–paid experts.
That way, she wouldn’t be breaking her promise to her mentor.
But now Nathaniel had boxed her into a dilemma. She had to reconsider whether she ever wanted to cure him.
Unable to make a decision right away, Sofia only knew that at this moment, she didn’t want to see him at all.
So, Sofia turned to Older Mr. Hart and said, “Grandpa, it’s getting late. Mr. Hart should rest, and so should you.”
Older Mr. Hart nodded in agreement, “Yes, it’s been a long day for you too. You should
rest.”
Then, he looked at Nathaniel and added, “Nathaniel, rest well. I will come see you
tomorrow.”
Nathaniel nodded, casting a meaningful glance at Sofia, and let them leave.
Once he was sure they were back in their respective rooms, Nathaniel turned to Kyler and said, “Retrieve all the surgeries she’s handled. Let’s see how good her skills really are.”
Kyler went off to do it, baffled at why Mr. Hart wanted to investigate even this.

Back in her room, Sofia wore an unusually angry expression.
She grabbed a pillow and hit it twice in frustration, muttering, “Bad man, you’d better stay paralyzed for life! you’re still so clever even lying down. I can’t imagine what will happen if you could stand.”
”
Fuming, she sat on the bed, recalling Nathaniel’s look before she left.
It was infuriating.
Sofia lay back on the bed, muttering curses at Nathaniel for hearing every insulting word she knew.
Just then, her phone beeped with a message. It was from Sylvia, the money–grubber.
Sylvia: Got the medicine. Pay up!
Sofía sighed. How did she get tangled up with this money–grubber?
If she weren’t rich, dealing with Sylvia would bankrupt her in no time.
After transferring the amount, Sofia asked, “When can I get it?”
“Tomorrow morning at eight, promptly in Campbell City. Shall I deliver it or will you pick it up?” Sylvia Grant replied.
Sofia twitched her mouth. “Deliver it.”
“Hmph, trying to save you some money,” Sylvia hypocritically remarked, “Rich lady indeed, so generous.
Suppressing the urge to roll her eyes, Sofia knew Sylvia too well after all these years.
Even if she went to pick it up herself, Sylvia would find a way to charge a fee.
After setting the time and place, Sofia cut off further conversation with Sylvia.
She got up from the bed and took out the mini device she had prepared, studying it intently.
Technically, she could cure Nathaniel even without this device, but it would take longer and be more painful for him.

Now that she understood the principles behind these devices, she knew how to maximize their effectiveness as a strong aid to Nathaniel’s recovery, along with her medical skills taught by her mentor and the medications Sylvia procured.
With these combined efforts, she could restore Nathaniel to full health within a month.
But doing so would mean breaking her promise to her mentor.
Sofia sighed deeply, resting her chin on her hand, lost in thought as she stared at the device.
Ever since she was brought back to the Schneider family at age seven, the day before parting with her mentor, he had carnestly told her to keep all her abilities hidden, and all the ways she differed from ordinary girls hidden too.
She must not let anyone know she could see in the dark, or that she didn’t feel the cold, or that she had a photographic memory…
Sofia knew she had to hide these things to live safely.
But she was a doctor, a career she loved dearly.
She couldn’t stand by knowing she could cure someone and do nothing.
She pursed her lips, murmuring to herself, “Mentor, I’m going against your wishes this time. Please forgive me.”
The next morning at eight, Sofia left the hospital and went to a café.
As soon as she entered, she saw a glamorous woman in a red dress waving at her.
Countless eyes fell on her, filled with admiration, jealousy, suspicion, and more, yet she remained unaffected.
Sylvia smiled brightly as Sofia sat down and pushed a cup of black Americano towards her. “No sugar, no milk, clears the mind.”
Sofia glanced at the coffee and said, “My mind is perfectly clear. I don’t need coffee.”
Especially not this bitter stuff. Sofia couldn’t stand the taste, it was torture to her taste buds.
Sylvia pursed her lips. “I think your mind isn’t quite clear.”

Leaning forward, she whispered in a voice only Sofia could hear, “Otherwise, why would you be so crazy, spending nearly ten million just on this little bottle of stuff?”
is
Sofia replied, “A quarter of that is
your commission.”
Implying that if this woman was
so greedy, how could she have spent such a fortune?
Sylvia leaned back, saying, “Between us, you spending this money is understandable. But what about that person you bought the medicine for? What’s your relationship with them? Is it worth spending so much money?”
Sofia held the small medicine bottle, her gaze fixed on the white pills inside.
Yes, what was her relationship with Nathaniel that she’d spent so much money?
Suddenly, Sofia felt a pang of regret. What a waste of money.
ching Sofia’s crestfallen expression, Sylvia laughed and said, “Seeing that look
on your
face puts me at ease. At least you still know how to value money. Otherwise, I’d think you were just after his handsome face, willing to be the fool.”
Sofia rubbed her eyelids, really wanting to shut this woman up.
But Sylvia laughed even more boldly, saying, “Or, let me give you an idea. He seems rich enough. Why not take advantage while he’s lying there unable to move, and fleece him good?”
Sofia considered for a moment, decisively thinking that doing so would be too inhumane.
Just thinking about Nathaniel lying in bed and giving her money, she felt a little sorry for him.
After packing up the medicine bottle, Sofia stopped chattering with Sylvia and left the café.
