Sofia Schneider slept for a long time.

She had thrashed in discomfort, but her mentor seemed indifferent, continuing to place the needles as if he couldn’t see her suffering.
One needle in particular had been inserted into her throat, and it was that needle that had jolted her awake. Even after waking, she could still feel an overwhelming sense of suffocation.
Her body turned cold, her teeth chattering uncontrollably.
She didn’t want to be alone.

Without thinking, her hand instinctively reached out to the side, but she didn’t find Nathaniel Hart there.
Sofia felt even worse. Without another thought, she jumped out of bed and ran out of the
room.
She didn’t bother to put on shoes, didn’t care that she was only wearing a thin nightgown.
All she wanted was to find Nathaniel–immediately, right now!
Finally, she found him in the kitchen.
Without a word, she threw herself into Nathaniel’s arms, holding him so tightly she nearly squeezed the life out of him.
But Nathaniel didn’t complain about the pain.
He held Sofia close, gently patting her back and pressing soft kisses to the top of her head, whispering, “Sofia, I’m here.”
Sofia’s body finally started to warm up. She lifted her face to look at Nathaniel and said, “I had a nightmare.”
Nathaniel had guessed as much but didn’t tell her that dreams aren’t real.
Instead, he cupped her face and kissed her gently, again and again.
“Don’t be afraid. You’re safe with me,” he said softly.
Sofia took a deep breath and whispered, “Don’t ever leave me alone in bed again.”
Nathaniel was momentarily at a loss for words.
This was the first time Sofia had shown such vulnerability in front of him.
He didn’t ask her about the dream, only gently patted her back, offering her comfort.
It took a while for Sofia to calm down and collect herself.
Pulling back from Nathaniel’s embrace, she looked at him curiously and asked, “What are you doing in here?”
