“The board likely wants to discuss the fallout from that video,” Diace remarked as the elevator reached its destination.
Scarlett squared her shoulders, determination flashing in her eyes. “Let’s see what they have to say.”
Inside the conference room, the upper management of Payne Group sat in a semi–circle, their expressions heavy with disapproval. Scarlett could feel their disdain cutting through the air like a blade as she entered.
“Well, if it isn’t our esteemed CEO,” said Henry Payne, one of the board’s more vocal critics. His tone dripped with sarcasm. “So, you decided to grace us with your presence after all?”
Scarlett smiled tightly as she took her seat, her gaze steady.
“Of course, Mr. Payne. I wouldn’t dream of neglecting the wisdom of the board,” she said, her words laced with subtle defiance, “After all, wasn’t it just last week that some of you suggested 1 be removed from my position?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. You’re the rightful CEO of this company. Nobody here is suggesting otherwise.
“From what I’ve gathered, you’re aware that we called you here to address the recent online controversy,” said Henry, his expression stem. The other board members nodded in agreement.
This situation cost the company a significant amount to contain, but the damage to our reputation has already been done.
“Scarlett, you can’t keep indulging the people around you, or eventually, it’s going to tale your down with it,” one of the senior members added.
Scarlett responded with a faint smile, unfazed by their words. “Gentlemen, I think you’ve got it wrong. Cedric is an outsider, yes, but he’s done so much for Payne Group Why can’t you cut him some slad??”

But don’t get too comfortable. If Cedric’s situation isn’t resolved by next week, the board will take matters into its own hands.”
Scarlett rose from her seat and tumed to Grace. “Let’s go, Grace. For now, the company is in good hands with the esteemed board,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. I trust I won’t return to find a complete mess.
