Chapter 8
Any struggle in the face of ironclad evidence was useless.
Adam lived up to his reputation as a top lawyer. His remarkable performance in court left an impression, and I was very satisfied with the judge’s ruling.
Ethan slumped into the chair, all the strength drained from his body. Ella no longer wore that smug expression when she scolded me. Nathan ran into Adam’s arms, reaching out for a hug.
The law is fair.
I walked out of the courthouse, and the rain had cleared. A rainbow hung in the sky, and the scent of fresh grass filled the air.
Nathan clung to my leg, watching warily as Ethan slowly approached us.
Ethan opened his mouth, his voice almost.

a pitiful plea.
“Come here, let me hold you.”
I nudged Nathan, but he clung tighter to my leg, shaking his head.
“I don’t want to.”
I sighed and patted his head gently.
Ethan stood frozen in place. I watched ast he slapped himself hard twice, tears streaming down his face.
He said, “I’m sorry.”
Nathan hid behind me, peeking out from around my side.
I took a deep breath, then saw Adam
walking toward me, and I couldn’t help but smile genuinely.
“Ethan, if only you’d known this would happen… I hope you and your new partner find happiness.”
Adam took Nathan’s hand and gave me a
soft smile.

“Let’s go.”
I followed his steps.
When Nathan hid behind Chloe, refusing to let me hold him, I suddenly felt all my strength drain away.
I never wanted to believe that the girl who once followed me around so naively would one day leave me for good.
It’s strange.
Back then, even when my mom treated her so badly, she didn’t give up on me. Why has she given up so easily now?
I know I deserve it.
Luna reminded me so much of Jane, and I couldn’t resist saying yes.
When I came home and saw Chloe without makeup, all those feelings had long since faded, and I thought I didn’t love her
anymore.
When she left me, I was filled with deep

regret.
Some people said that what Luna and I had was pure love, but my first thought was of Chloe.
She really gave me everything.
She was so good to me, but I ruined it all myself.
I went to the cemetery to bring flowers for her father. What I saw was her, that man, and my son.
They were laughing, so happy.
I hadn’t seen Chloe smile at me in so long. I always made her sad.
I bought back the home we used to share.
The plants by the window had all withered. By the time I noticed the ash on them, it was too late.
I suddenly remembered the way Chloe used to look up at me, smiling as she said she still liked me.

When I looked up, tears were already streaming down my face.
