Chapter 21
Enzo still remembered Alyssa fantasizing about their future children when she’d still loved him. If she had a daughter, she would’ve doted on her and turned her into the world’s happiest little girl. If she had a son, she would raise him to be as outstanding as Enzo.
Her eyes had been bright when she’d said that, and she’d even drawn images of their future children. However, Enzo had ripped and thrown all of those drawings into the fireplace when she’d given them to him.
He’d even icily told her that he could have children with anyone but her. He’d told her to stop having unrealistic fantasies.
Regret and bitterness filled Enzo’s eyes when he remembered these things. In the past, Alyssa had clung to him and described her fantasies. But now, he was the one fantasizing about having children and a life with her.
Just then, someone knocked on his study door. “The car’s ready, Mr. Slater.”
Enzo grabbed the gift from his desk and strode out of the room. He got into the car and leaned against the backseat, shutting his eyes to rest them on the way to the airport. He kept mentally rehearsing what he would say when he saw Alyssa and her daughter.
However, a blinding white light shone right into the car at that moment. This was followed by the sharp screeching of brakes and a deafening crash.
The impact made Enzo shoot forward and ram his head on the front seat and ceiling. Glass shattered and scratched him everywhere, drawing blood.
A truck had rammed into the car, sending it flying before crashing onto the ground. Enzo became a bloodied mess, but he didn’t seem to feel the pain–he only felt sad that he wouldn’t be able to see Alyssa and her daughter.
Screams filled the air, and the ambulance and police sirens mingled. Enzo felt himself getting sleepier inside the car. Finally, he stopped hearing anything.
Members of the Slater family huddled together anxiously before the operating theater at the hospital. They looked panicked.
The seconds ticked, and dawn gradually broke. The doors to the operation theater had remained shut throughout the night, but they now swung open.
The Slaters hurriedly circled the doctor and asked how Enzo was doing.
The doctor looked hesitant. He had to pick his words carefully before uttering them. Enzo had a concussion and several fractures, but those were only the tip of the iceberg. The worst part was that he had a blood clot in his brain from the concussion.
It pressed against an important nerve, so the doctor couldn’t operate on it. They had no choice but to wait for it to disappear on its own. Before that happened, Enzo would be comatose.
Marie stood at the front of the crowd. She almost passed out when she heard that. After a long while, she asked, “Where’s the guy who crashed into Enzo? Where is he?”
The butler said, “The truck driver died on the spot after crashing into Mr. Enzo, Mrs. Slater. But…”
“But what? Spit it out!” She looked angry and impatient. Her expression made his heart tremble.
He said hesitantly, “But we found out that the people behind the accident are from the Quill family. They sent someone to ram into Mr. Enzo because of Nadine, who’s behind bars.

Marie instantly understood when she heard that. The Quills had often gone to the Slater residence to kick up a fuss when Nadine had first been imprisoned. When things had been at their worst, they’d even made Marie and Nelson end up in the hospital.
Later, after Enzo had returned to the country to deal with the situation, he’d finally steeled himself and ignored his past ties with the Quills, leaving them on the brink of ruin. The key figures in the family had ended up in prison or in the hospital. With that, the Slaters had gotten some room to breathe. That was why they hadn’t expected the Quills to have a backup plan.
Marie’s blood boiled at how things had turned out. She went to the prison where Nadine was detained.
When the prison wardens brought Nadine out, her shackles dragging on the floor, Marie couldn’t hold herself back anymore. She slapped Nadine hard and shrieked, “You bitch!”
