Chapter 17

The snow made Enzo fall sick once again. He was delirious from his high fever and kept calling Alyssa’s name while asleep.
Calvin took pity on him and used all his connections to beg Alyssa to visit Enzo at the hospital. However, all he received was a recording device that Adrian had asked a maid to deliver.
Enzo was alone in the silent hospital ward. He stared at the recording device for a long time before playing it. After a burst of static, he heard Alyssa’s voice loud and clear.
She sounded rather mocking as she said, “I probably would’ve gone to the grave without an apology from him if nothing had happened to Nadine. That’s just what people are like. They only regret their actions once the truth is out or once they’ve lost people important to them.
“I don’t need his belated repentance, though. I don’t want to become entangled with him again over these things. That will do nothing but add to my troubles. The best way for our relationship to end is by having a clean break.”
The recording was short. Enzo listened to it repeatedly, hoping against hope that he would find something to prove it was fake. However, he knew Alyssa’s voice too well–so well that he instantly knew she was the one who’d said those words. There was no chance of the recording being fake.
Every word she uttered made it clear that she didn’t like him; there wasn’t even a hint of hatred in her voice. Her calm tone drove a point home–Enzo had to give up. He didn’t stand a chance with Alyssa.
He smashed the recording device on the floor, his eyes bloodshot and his chest heaving with rage. This scared Calvin, who had hurried in when he’d heard the ruckus. Before he could say anything, Enzo roared, “Get the fuck out!”
The door slid shut again. Enzo flopped onto the bed in despair, his eyes filled with regret. “Liss…”
Meanwhile, Adrian was at the Forrest residence. He smiled when he learned Enzo had received the recording device.
It was an infectious smile that made Alyssa join him as she came downstairs. “What are you so happy about?”
He hastily got up to help her down the last step. “A small but interesting matter.”
She didn’t ask for more information as she sat beside him on the couch. He wrapped a toned arm around her and pulled her close, pressing his face to hers.
His warm breath fanned over her ear, tickling her. She instinctively wanted to dodge, but this seemed to pique Adrian’s interest. He kept blowing on her ear.
Alyssa was ultimately unable to move away from him. He pinned her to the couch and pressed his lips to hers, taking her breath away. Their tongues danced passionately, and Alyssa gradually stopped struggling. She shut her eyes compliantly as if this was supposed to happen.
She forgot to think, nor did she want to. All she knew was that her instincts were telling her to wrap her arms around him and hold him closer.
When the kiss ended, Adrian lifted her into his arms and headed upstairs. Soon, a man’s muffled groans and a woman’s wanton moans seeped out from underneath the thick bedroom door.
The maids hurriedly gave them their privacy when they heard this. Even the moon ducked shyly behind the clouds.
The following morning, Adrian flipped a sleeping Alyssa around in his arms. He peppered kisses on her body, starting from her hickey–covered shoulders to her soft lips. He only stopped when she let out a whine of displeasure and patted her soothingly, letting her go back to sleep.
When he headed downstairs after freshening up, he saw the maids waiting for them. They gave him conflicted looks. One said, “Someone suddenly dropped off a pile of gifts outside the house and said they were for Mrs. Forrest, sir. What do you…”
Though Adrian and Alyssa were only engaged, he’d told the household staff to address Alyssa as Mrs. Forrest.
Adrian knew who the gifts were from when he heard that. He didn’t even bat an eye as he said calmly, “Return them. Don’t let Alyssa hear about this.”
