Chapter 14
Enzo forgot about the odd surge of emotion and hurried to Angleria, where the Camden residence was. He couldn’t wait to see Alyssa. He wanted to apologize to her in person for everything he’d done–it had all been his fault. He hoped she could forgive him.
However, he didn’t manage to even set foot in the house half a month after arriving in Angleria. The way the Camden family’s maids looked at him–like he was their worst enemy -made the reason painfully clear. Even if he were a fool, he could understand why.
Enzo was left with no choice but to wait for Alyssa outside the house. On this day, he finally got to see her. His eyes lit up. He got out of his car and headed toward her, about to call her name when he froze.
Alyssa got out of the car, and a tall figure followed her. He even wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close!
Enzo dropped the gift he held as his blood boiled. “Alyssa!”
Alyssa stiffened when she heard his familiar voice in the distance. A bone–deep fear surged in her, spreading throughout her body.
The voice and tone were much too familiar–Enzo had always barked her name like that whenever he thought she’d harmed Nadine.
Adrian’s eyes glinted coldly when he felt her trembling. He hurriedly patted her back soothingly before telling her to get back into the car. Before shutting the door, he held her hand and said, “Don’t worry, okay? I’m here for you.”
Once he shut the door, he unleashed the iciness in his eyes. He whipped around and punched Enzo hard as the latter stormed over.
In the past, Enzo would’ve immediately reacted and dodged the attack. However, he was much weaker than before because of everything that had happened.
He couldn’t fight back as Adrian’s punch sent him crashing to the ground. Then, he couldn’t even get back on his feet.
The Camden family’s butler handed Adrian an umbrella as it started to pour. He accepted it and looked down at Enzo imperiously, his calm gaze like a noiseless challenge.
This stabbed Enzo painfully. To his dismay, Adrian didn’t say anything to him from beginning to end. The latter didn’t even want to spare him another glance. He put away the umbrella and got into the car as lightning lit up the sky. Then, the Maserati slowly drove past Camden Manor’s gates.
The iron gates swung shut heartlessly, forming a barrier between the two worlds.
Alyssa didn’t want to think about why Enzo was there. Everything to do with him had stopped having anything to do with her the moment she’d given up on him. All she wanted now was to live in the present.
Adrian’s thoughts echoed hers. Perhaps it was his masculine instinct to act possessively, but he didn’t want his fiancée to spare any other man a glance.
So, neither of them talked about what had happened with Enzo.
Adrian sat beside Alyssa at the dining table after changing his clothes. Then, he and Philip started discussing wedding dates. Alyssa was one of the stars of the show, so she had no objection to that. She sat there and listened to them talk, only occasionally expressing her opinion.
Adrian’s attention was partly on Philip and partly on her. He peeled shrimp for her one moment and wiped her fingers the next.
This made her blush. Although he’d already given her such treatment during lunch, she still felt embarrassed. Philip had cared for her like that when he’d been home, but he’d left the country when she was six, after which Enzo had brought her to the Slater residence.
There was no denying that Enzo had doted on her, but he’d wanted to train her to be independent. So, he’d never helped her with these things unless she was sick. After he’d gotten together with Nadine, Alyssa’s status in the Slater residence had plummeted, so things only got worse from there.
Adrian was the second man to ever treat her like this, and he cared for her like she was a fragile doll. He seemed to fear anything happening to her despite her being an adult. It was even more embarrassing that he was acting like this with Philip around.
Alyssa bit her lip before eating the shrimp Adrian had peeled for her. To repay the favor, she got him some broth. As she passed it to him, she said softly, “Be careful. It’s hot,” He was surprised. Then, he smiled and accepted it.
