Chapter 8
They suddenly realized I was still there.
Ricky Grayton opened his mouth as if to speak but stopped.
Sharna Allison, with tears in her eyes, looked pitiful as she said,
“Alexia, maybe you have so
urgent to discuss right now, but you can see my hand is
injured. If I don’t get it treated soon, it could get infected and might even require
amputation.”
She broke a nail. It was just a drop of blood. Amputation seemed a bit dramatic, didn’t it?
And her legs weren’t injured–couldn’t she go by herself?
“You don’t usually dress up, so you probably don’t understand how important nails are to a
woman,” she added.
“If this is about personal feelings, I can apologize to you. But please, can you let us pass
first?”
I hadn’t even said a word to criticize her.
Yet somehow, she had placed me in the role of someone irrational, selfish, and
inconsiderate.
Ricky’s face flushed with frustration and anger.
He shot me a glare, clearly wishing I’d end this “farce” immediately.
The way he looked at me–it was as if, by blocking their way to the doctor, I was putting
Sharna’s life at imminent risk.
“Alexia, stop making a scene. If you really want an explanation, I’ll talk to you properly when I get back.”

“I’m not making a scene,” I replied calmly. “I just have something to tell you.‘
I smiled faintly, staring directly at the two of them.
“Your parents said they haven’t seen us in a while. They want us to visit this weekend.”
With that, I turned to leave.
Ricky’s expression was one I had never seen before–genuine surprise.
He looked at me with a strange, almost perplexed gaze.
“Are you saying you came here just to tell me that?”
What did he expect me to say?
I chuckled softly.
“You’d better take your secretary to see the doctor now. Don’t let anything serious happen.”
Ricky’s face was filled with shock.
His lips moved as if to speak, but whatever he wanted to say never made it out.
It wasn’t until Sharna tugged on his hand, pulling him along, that he finally disappeared
from my sight.
