Chapter 43
On the sixth day, I walked into the bank, hoping to secure a loan of Bo thousand dollars.
After completing all the paperwork, the bank staff informed me that the review process would take two days.
Two days later, I received a call from the bank. “Sir, we’re sorry, but your loan application has been declined. Upon review, we found that you currently don’t have a stable income, and your account statements show low activity. Unfortunately, we cannot approve your loan at this time.”
“My income was stable for the past year. Doesn’t that count?” I gripped my phone tighter, sweat forming on my palms.
The next moment, an unexpected voice came through the line. “That was in the past. What do you have now?” “Edison?” I was stummed to hear Edison Stone’s voice. Could my failed loan application have something to do with him? “Jeshua, you’re smart. You recognized my voice right away,” Edison said, his tone smug.
Frowning, I was about to hang up when his voice stopped me. “Your house, your car, yourself? If I were you, I’d save everyone the trouble and jump off the roof.”
His words hit me like a cold gust of wind, sending a chill down my spine.

How did Edison know all of this? Could he have been having me followed?
I frowned, my voice deep and cold. “How do you know these things?”
“Just a guess.” Achilling laugh echoed through the phone.
Thung up with a grim expression, but a memory suddenly resurfaced. The day Mom and I left Holmes Group, we had seen Abigail talking with the group
A disturbing thought crept into my mind. Could all of this be part of a scheme orchestrated by Sophia?
The idea barely took shape in my mind before I dismissed it. Sophia wasn’t the kind of person to do something like that.
I turned to the window, taking a deep breath to calm myself before continuing to call other banks in hopes of getting a loan.
But appeared had no more time. Mom had been taken by those people again.
moment I answered her call, her trantic cries pierced through the line. “Joshua, save me! Please, save me!”
“Mom, where are you?” I lurched from my seat and rushed out the door, heading downstairs as fast as I could.
The next moment, an arrogant, mocking voice came through the phone. “We’re at your house.”
“We agreed on ten days. It’s only been eight! Why did you take my mom so suddenly?”
I tried to stay calm, but my entire body was trembling uncontrollably. I disliked Mom, but she was the only family I had left. I couldn’t lose her. The person on the other end chuckled. “Because I’m in a bad mood today, I thought I’d teach you debt–dodgers a lesson ahead of schedule. “Please, don’t do anything rash. I’ll come right over,” I said quickly.
Before I could finish, the call was abruptly cut off.
On the way to my mom’s house, I called Jayden. I finally swallowed my pride and asked him for help.
“My mom owes some debtors 230 thousand dollars. I’m still so thousand dollars short. I–I tried to get a lo option. Can you please lend me to thousand dollars?”
