Chapter 21
Jayden reached out and pulled Juliette aside, then looked at Sophia with a complex expression
In his heart, Jayden didn’t believe that someone as ruthless as Sophia would suddenly be kind to Joshua. But during the days he was unconscious, he had witnessed her repeatedly coming to the hospital.
Maybe she still had feelings for him after all these years, but she just hadn’t realized it herself.
“Joshua, are you hungry?”
As soon as Jayden spoke, Juliette’s voice followed immediately. “He’s been unconscious for so many days, so of course he’s hungry. Let’s go. I’ll go out with you to buy him some soup.”
“But…” His words were cut off as she pulled him out of the ICU.
As soon as they stopped outside the ICU, he immediately shook off her hand.
“Why did you pull me out? What if they end up alone in there and start arguing again?”
“This is their own problem. They should resolve it themselves,” she said as she walked to sit by the ICU door
Jayden frowned and sat beside her. “Didn’t you just say you’d go buy soup for Joshua? Why are you sitting here?”
“If he starves, I’ll be the happiest person alive,” Juliette said indifferently, then lowered her head to play on her phone.
Jayden glanced toward the ICU and muttered, “You have a sharp tongue but a soft heart. You’re clearly worried about Joshua having another episode, but you still say things like that.”
After they left, Sophia looked at me with even more apology in her eyes
“Joshua, I’ve done many things to hurt you. Can you forgive the stupid things I did?”
This was the first time I had seen her like this, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised. After all, I never thought someone as proud as her would ever apologize
She gazed at me intently, waiting for my answer.
After a long silence, my hoarse voice came out. “When I was unconscious, I heard you say something. You said that if I woke up, you would be willing to listen to my explanation about what happened back then. Is that true?”
She looked at me in shock, clearly not expecting me to bring this up.
A flash of complexity passed through her eyes, and she awkwardly said, “The past is the past. Let’s not talk about it anymore.”
She didn’t want to talk about it, but I didn’t want to let it go. I didn’t want her to be kind to me just because I was on the brink of death.
I tightened my grip on the blanket and lowered my eyelids. “Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part.”
In the past, I had hoped she would let go of Edson and love me wholeheartedly, just like she had loved him. But now, it was clearly impossible.
Sophia only let go of her hatred for me because she thought I was dying.
“That’s not it “She firmly denied what I said. After a moment of silence, she spoke with difficulty. “After you fell unconscious, I had someone look into Edson’s past. I found out that he really wasn’t the person I thought he was
“He indulged in all kinds of vices, completely different from the person I knew.”
She would never have fallen for him so blindly if she had known he was like that. She clenched and released her hands before lifting her gaze to meet mine again, lær eyes now full of resolve.
“Now it’s your turn. Explain.”
