Chapter 9
“She’s already with another man!” Kate tried to grab his sleeve. “I’m the only one still here, waiting for you to turn back!”
Bernard swung his hand back and Kate immediately collapsed to the ground. “Kate, I’ve warned you before, don‘ t show up in front of her again! If you do, don’t blame me for being merciless!”
Kate ran out crying.
Armand, clutching his chest and
pretending to be scared, said, “Jane, is he your ex–husband? So scary, no wonder you divorced him.”
Watching his exaggerated antics, I couldn’t help but chuckle.
Hearing my laugh, Bernard turned his head and the coldness in his eyes instantly melted away.
“Jane, it’s been so long since I’ve seen you

smile.” He lowered his head with a bitter smile. “After you left, I thought about it for a long time and couldn’t even remember your smile. Thinking back to when we were together, it was really happy.”
I gave a faint smile and replied, “Do you know why memories are always the most beautiful? Because once they’re gone, they can never come back.”
When Bernard’s mother learned that I had returned to the country, she asked to meet with me.
Out of respect for the elders, I didn’t refuse.
My past interactions with her hadn’t been many and she had always looked down on my family background, feeling that I was trying to climb the social ladder by marrying into the Yvon family.
To protect me, Bernard had even moved out of the family home.
“Now that you’re back, there are some formalities that should be dealt with.”

Her expression was arrogant as she got straight to the point as if the person who begged me to come back and take a look during that phone call wasn’t even her.
“I always thought you were a disaster for him,” she said coldly, “I never expected you to be so heartless. He’s lying in the hospital and
you can’t even be bothered to see him! Now you’ve brought another man back and you’re dragging my son into this, refusing to sign the divorce paper. Do you have any shame?”
Looking at her righteous posture, I couldn’t help but laugh. “Mrs. Yvon, why don’t you ask your son who refuses to sign the divorce agreement? I left it ready before I went abroad. He’s the one who dragged it out for all these years!”
I had heard from the housekeeper that Bernard had framed the divorce agreement and slept with it every night.
When a maid accidentally dropped it while cleaning, she was immediately fired.

Chapter 9
“As long as he hasn’t signed the agreement, you two aren’t divorced. You and that foreign man are committing bigamy!”
It seemed that she had also seen the live
stream from Kate.
“Well, sorry to disappoint you, but Armand is a foreigner. Divorce certificates don’t hold any weight in his country. So, you can’t threaten me.”
“You…” Bernard’s mother said, her chest heaving with anger.
I didn’t want to waste any more words with her, so I stood up and left.
People who trample on true feelings didn’t deserve my patience.
Before leaving for abroad again, I had my last dinner with my mother.
Since her divorce from my father, she had been living alone.
I tentatively asked, “Why don’t you come with me abroad? You’re alone here and no

one is taking care of you.”
She shook her head, her smile a bit bitter. “I’m getting old, I can’t adjust to life abroad. I’m fine on my own, don’t worry about me.”
She hesitated for a moment before speaking,
“Jane, I’ve always wanted to say sorry to you. If I hadn’t divorced your dad, you wouldn‘ t…”
I felt my eyes start to well up.
When my parents divorced, it was a big mess, with arguments over money and who would take care of me.
It was so ugly that I grew up afraid to easily trust in love. But as I got older, I came to realize that this wasn’t her fault.
