Chapter 6
“Please, I’m begging you, for the sake of what we once had, let me keep the baby!”
Bernard let out a cold snort. “Your biggest mistake was going after Jane. You knew full. well that I love her more than my own life! You‘ re the reason she left. You deserve everything you‘ re getting!”
With that, he turned and walked away, ignoring Kate’s wails and pleas, not sparing her even a glance.
The moment he stepped out of the hospital, his phone buzzed with a call from a friend. “Last time wasn’t enough? Well, I’ve found a few new girls for you tonight!”
Bernard decided to drown his sorrows in
alcohol.
In the past, he enjoyed these wild nights. But now, no matter how much he drank or partied, it felt empty. Nothing could fill the

void she left behind.
Now, his heart felt empty and he couldn’t muster any interest in anything.
A few seductive women approached him, but he didn’t even spare them a glance. He coldly muttered one word. “Leave.”
Unable to stand the chaotic, smoky atmosphere any longer, he stormed out and called his secretary. “Find Jane, no matter what it takes.”
He was confident that if he could just find me, he could win back my heart.
But what he didn’t know was I had already discarded his love and everything about him, like something no longer of any
value.

My new identity was that of a coffee shop owner in a small European country.
Life there was peaceful and the people were kind. Over time, I had become friends

with many of the locals.
There were even a few young boys who had shown interest in me, but I turned them all
down.
Perhaps it was my self–protection
mechanism, but I rarely thought about my
past anymore.
Occasionally, I dreamt of the old days and when I woke up, my pillow was soaked
with tears.
Maybe what Kate had offered him was something fresh and exciting, while the years spent with me, no matter how passionate, had settled into a quiet routine.
So, he grew weary and disenchanted. The promises of the past had long scattered with the wind.
Until one day, the doorbell suddenly chimed. Out of habit, I said, “Welcome.”
But when I looked up, I was stunned.
Standing in the doorway was a gaunt

figure, skeletal and frail.
A dull ache of memories surged over me like a tidal wave.
Just as I was about to leave, he grabbed my wrist with force, pulling me into his embrace, holding me so tightly it felt as though he wanted to fuse me into himself.
“Jane, I’ve been looking for you everywhere!”
I struggled desperately to free myself from his grasp. The neighbors who saw what was happening came over.
“I’m fine. Just ask him to leave,” I said.
A few strong men stood nearby, leaving Bernard no choice but to leave..
His gaze was firm as he said, “Jane, I won’t give up.”
When I returned home, he was already
waiting downstairs.
With no way to avoid him, I crossed
arms and looked at him coldly.

“Bernard, you‘ ve seen the divorce papers, haven’t you? Why are you still bothering me?”
His face was full of urgency. “Jane, please listen to me! My feelings for Kate were just a fleeting distraction. I admit I lost my way for a moment, but the one I’ve always loved is you!”
I let out a cold snort. “Listen to yourself. Don’t you think it’s ridiculous? When I agreed to marry you, do you remember what I said? If you betrayed me, I would disappear forever. Now, I’m just keeping my word.”
Bernard‘ s face grew even paler and he looked as if he might collapse. “I put in so much effort to find you. I won’t give up, Jane. I will keep waiting until the day you forgive me.”
I knew all too well how stubborn he could
- be. After all, he proposed 99 times before I finally said yes.

For the next month, he showed up every day, either downstairs from my apartment or at the café.
