Chapter 4
As the words fell, the breathing on the other end of the phone became heavy and serious, just like when Ethan Chase
used to get angry.
Not wanting to hear any more of those unbearable curses, I simply hung up and turned off my phone.
Then, using my work phone, I contacted the most influential entertainment reporters in the country, asking them to
heavily publicize the news of Ethan Chase carrying Chloe James to the hospital in his arms.
When the reporters heard my request, they were all astonished:
“Ms. Hayes, are you sure you want to do this?”
I couldn’t blame them for being so surprised. Previously, I had always paid to suppress such news, then explained it away
under the guise of filming.
But this time, I wasn’t planning to do that.
Since we were already preparing for divorce, I naturally wanted to protect our shared assets to ensure I’d get more when
it came time to divide them.
“But I have one condition.”
The entertainment reporters paused, then said, “Go ahead, Ms. Hayes.”
“I want fifty percent of the profits. If you agree, we’ll sign the contract immediately and start preparing. I can even provide
you with more authentic material.”
My certainty made the entertainment reporters even more excited.
Because no news could be more attention–grabbing than the love life of a major movie star.
The next day, the news of Ethan Chase and Chloe James’s childhood sweetheart romance broke, quickly dominating the
top three trending topics.
Not only did I not handle it, but I also scheduled an interview for a new assistant.
That night, Ethan Chase, who was filming in another city, made the rare effort to rush home overnight.
Even from across the living room, I could smell Chloe James’s signature perfume on him.
“Samantha, aren’t you going to explain yourself?”
The man’s expression was grave, his gaze cold as he looked at me, those eyes identical to the venomous snake I had
fought for my life against on the hilltop that night.
“Do you have any idea how much this affects Chloe’s career?!
“Her house is surrounded by paparazzi now, she can’t even leave normally!”
I casually ate chips while watching cartoons, not even bothering to look up:
“Isn’t this exactly what the fans want? It’s also good publicity for the new drama.
“What I did was the result of weighing the pros and cons.”
Ethan Chase had said the same thing to me two years ago.
At that time, Chloe James was filming a scene where the female lead falls off a cliff. It was also her first role since entering
the entertainment industry.
Just before filming, Chloe James tearfully told Ethan Chase that she was afraid of heights.
To avoid delaying the shooting schedule and to make the scene look authentic,
Ethan Chase, without a second thought, made me change into Chloe James’s costume to be her stand–in, jumping off a cliff several stories high without any safety measures.
“Chloe already said there would be crew members at the bottom of the cliff for safety. Samantha, why are you hesitating?! “Ethan… I’m, I’m afraid of heights too.”
I trembled, clutching Ethan Chase’s arm, but he shook me off coldly, saying:
“How come I never noticed you were so difficult before? As soon as Chloe arrives, you’re suddenly afraid of heights. Are you being dramatic, Samantha?”
“But I really am afraid of heights…”
“Enough with the ‘buts‘! Samantha, let me tell you. What I’m doing is the result of weighing the pros and cons.”
With those words, Ethan Chase pushed me off the cliff without a second thought.
