Chapter 66
“Not tonight!”
I screeched, urging Bright to call the police again, this delay felt like being stuck in darkness
for centuries. I let my tears flow down my cheeks, praying in my heart. Leo came in front of the bullet which was supposed to end my life.
“Please save him, God. He can’t die like this.”
My sincere prayers eventually softened Heaven’s resolve, I heard the sirens of the police
vans and ambulance soon, resulting in cross firing. It didn’t take them long to subdue the
opposition, I held Leo’s hand and assured him.
“You will be fine, Leo. Please hang in here. We will take you to the hospital.”
A bleak smile stretched Leo’s brown lips; his pale face trembled my heart. He coughed up blood in an attempt to speak.
“Don’t lie to yourself, Laura. I am going but …
I hope you and Bright will find happiness together. I wish you … you …
Gasping for air, he was on the brink of death when the firing stopped, prevailing silence in
the surrounding. I heard anxious voices of the paramedical staff.
“Make a way for the gurney. We have GSW patient, male. Oxygen stat…”
A team of emergency rescuers arrived like the first ray of sunshine after a dark, long night,
they immediately tended to Leo. Numbed by shock and fear, I blindly sprinted behind the
staff, but they asked me.
“Ma’am, you can’t come in the ambulance with us. Please take a cab to a general hospital.*
Because of the terrorist attack, Bright’s car wasn’t safe for driving, and it was impossible to order a cab so late. So, I begged officer Nolan for a ride. He was so kind to take us to the hospital.

When we reached there, Leo was in the operation theater for surgery, the ER doctor requested me for a check–up.
“Miss Laura, you were under attack, it must be terrifying. Please let me examine you.
Mr. Leo will be fine. Our surgeons will try their best to save his life.”
Like a pro, Bright was able to discipline his emotions shortly, he took me to the examination
room.
“Please stay with doctors, Laura. I will consult Leo’s case with the hospital’s chief.
I will arrange the best doctors for him.”
He left me there alone, hanging, I was dwindling between hopes and fears while praying for Leo’s safety. If he didn’t dare to save me, I could be in his place, undoubtedly dead as my immune system wasn’t as strong as an ice hockey player.
I didn’t want him to die and leave me indebted for the rest of my life. It would be better if he woke up shortly, and I could scold him at length for his recklessness.
The doctors examined me and prescribed some medicines for shock and panic. I felt better
after that treatment.
Leo’s surgery was long, and because of excessive blood loss, he needed blood. His rare AB negative blood group was hard to find, it was Bright’s connection in the city that the hospital could arrange for ten units of blood on urgent notice.
We were pacing back and forth in front of the doors of the operation theater when the red light turned green after a painful wait, signaling the end of the surgery.
My heart forgot to beat as a doctor walked out and took off his mask to speak…
“The patient’s condition was critical when you brought him. Unfortunately, that bullet has damaged Mr. Leo’s heart as well.”
“No!”
As soon as these words came out of the doctor’s mouth, I couldn’t help but scream, the low survival rates for such penetrating injuries pushed me into the abyss of darkness. The beat

pulsating in my ears didn’t let me hear whatever the doctor said after that. I could only see his lips moving with tiresome expressions on his face.
The four hours of surgery, blood arrangements, the doctors‘ complete dedication, and my prayers, everything was in vain.
It was like heaven didn’t want to hear me anymore!
A lone tear escaped my eye to mourn Leo’s death when my body was jerked uncontrollably, Bright’s thrilled tone resounded in my ears.
“Leo is alive, Laura. We weren’t late.”
