Chapter 90
“I don’t like random people coming in and out of my house and getting it all dirty,” Sarah said. She leaned against the cabinet and glanced coldly at Lily.
Lily took a brief glance at the slippers but didn’t move. Then, she lifted her gaze to meet Sarah’s.
“This house isn’t yours yet. Today’s conversation will decide whether or not Xavier and I get a divorce. Are you sure you’re not going to let me in?”
At the mention of the divorce, Sarah seemed slightly moved. She flipped her hair arrogantly and walked into the living room.
The morning sun streamed the windows, casting a soft glow across the room. Sarah took a seat lazily on the chaise lounge. She picked up a nearby pillow and embraced it in her arms–it was a pillow that Lily had carefully picked out.
Lily couldn’t help but feel a sense of discomfort as she walked into the villa. However, she quickly suppressed her feelings.
“I know that you resigned from Nova Group for a reason–was it because you wanted to see me beg or to prove that Xavier was on your side?”
Sarah had had no reason to resign from the Nova Group in the first place. Therefore, Lily wasn’t sure if Xavier was playing along with Sarah to embarrass her or if he was simply so oblivious to Sarah’s tricks.
Plus, if Sarah really had resigned, they would no longer be able to use business trips or work as an excuse to see each other.
Lily recalled the background check Maryanne had done on Sarah.
According to her, the reason why the Fultons had planned to send Sarah abroad in the first place was because they’d realized her relationship with Xavier.
No woman would want to stay in the shadows forever. Lily knew that Sarah wanted more–she wanted a proper title.
This proved to be especially so when Sarah made numerous sarcastic remarks when the two of them met privately. Sarah studied Lily carefully. Then, she asked cautiously, “Lily, are you really willing to go through with the divorce?” Xavier was a prominent figure in society. Even if he didn’t love her, the title of Mrs. Fulton alone carried enough weight. Sarah had also performed a background check on Lily. She’d found out that Lily’s life had always revolved around Xavier.
However, after their recent encounters, Sarah realized that Lily wasn’t what she’d expected.
“As long as you return to Nova Group as vice president, we’ll proceed with the divorce,” Lily said bluntly. That was her agreement with Xavier. Lily’s bluntness left Sarah stunned.
After a long pause, Sarah finally responded. “Honestly, whether or not you get a divorce doesn’t matter to me. So, you can’t tempt me.”
Sarah pretended to remain calm. She was unwilling to let Lily have the upper hand.
However, Lily interpreted Sarah’s words as suggesting that she’d no hope of marrying into the Fultons and that she was content to keep her relationship with Xavier hidden forever.
But just because they were willing to keep their relationship in the shadows didn’t mean that she wanted to live with Xavier like this forever!
“Look, I’m not trying to tempt you–I’m just offering you a chance to be around Xavier more. If you don’t go back to work as the vice president of Nova Group, you won’t get to see him as often, right?”
Xavier was often occupied with work. As his wife, she only saw him in the evenings. Sometimes, she wouldn’t even see him for days when he was on business trips.
As Xavier’s mistress, Sarah had even fewer chances to see him.
“Mrs. Fulton, you’re very considerate… It’s such a shame that Xavier doesn’t like you,” Sarah said sarcastically. She took every opportunity to mock Lily.
“But being understanding is never enough. You need to be much more capable to stand by his side, don’t you agree?”
Lily had expected Sarah to mock her. Although two years wasn’t a long time, she’d put all her energy and effort into her relationship with Xavier. How could she not feel hurt? However, she didn’t want to show her feelings in front of Sarah.
“So, are you willing to go back to work or not? If not, I’ll be leaving; you can continue keeping your relationship with Xavier a secret.”
After a few seconds of silence, Sarah stood up. “Fine, I’ll go back to work.”
“I want you to start today,” Lily said as she pulled out the divorce agreement. She’d planned to go straight to Nova Group after this to get Xavier to sign them.
Sarah paused briefly before replying, “Fine.”
Lily turned and left.
Through the windows, Sarah watched as Lily walked out, feeling conflicted. Things were unfolding just as she’d expected–Lily and Xavier were going for a divorce.
However, Lily’s reaction wasn’t what she’d anticipated. She’d thought that Lily would throw a huge tantrum and argue with Xavier. That way, Xavier would surely have pushed for divorce. However, Lily hadn’t argued at all–she’d simply agreed to it.
Sarah pressed her lips tightly together. After gathering her thoughts, she pulled out her phone and called Xavier.
“Xavier, can I not quit my job at Nova Group?”
“What happened?” Xavier was taken aback. He wasn’t sure how Lily had managed to convince Sarah.
Could it be that she’d finally realized she’d misunderstood Sarah and him? Had Lily really apologized to Sarah? Otherwise, given Sarah’s temper, she wouldn’t have asked to come back
Sarah hesitated, then said, “Mrs. Fulton came to see me. She said that if I don’t go back to work, she’ll expose your marriage and release evidence of our affair.”
She paused briefly before continuing, “Xavier, it’s really inappropriate for me to be staying at Glenview Villa… If Mrs. Fulton exposes this, it’ll cause you a lot of trouble.”
