Chapter 89
As Terence spoke, he lifted his gaze and looked directly at Lily.
Lily was stunned. She quickly turned away to avoid his gaze. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pried into your private matters.”
She’d asked that question thinking that his reply would be related to work–she’d thought he’d gone abroad for better opportunities. She hadn’t expected Terence to be so open to the extent of sharing such personal details.
She didn’t know how else to continue the conversation.
Terence lowered his gaze and continued chopping the ingredients. “There’s no need to act so formal around me.”
“Alright.” Lily assumed that he was just trying to be polite. She quickly turned around and left.
She was aware that she’d been a bit of a mess recently. Besides, Terence was a guest at her place. So, it wasn’t right for him to be cooking and taking care of her every day.
Her thoughts were all over the place, and she didn’t have the energy to make small talk.
She thought to herself that once her divorce was settled, she would be in a better state to properly thank Maryanne and Terence.
An hour later, dinner was served. Maryanne ate as if she hadn’t seen food in days. Meanwhile, she also continued to curse at Xavier between bites.
Lily was used to Maryanne’s behavior; she didn’t bother to stop her. Terence, on the other hand, ate his food quietly. From time to time, he would also serve food for Maryanne and Lily. After dinner, Maryanne and Terence got prepared to leave.
“Terence, why do I have to go home? I want to stay with Lily and keep her company!” Initially, Maryanne had planned to stay the night. However, Terence wouldn’t allow it.
He quickly started the engine and drove off.
“Staying with her isn’t going to comfort her. You’re just hurting her more with the things you say.”
During dinner, Maryanne had repeatedly brought up Xavier. Despite Terence’s attempts to stop her, she hadn’t picked up on his hints.
Lily needed peace, not someone who continuously reminded her about Xavier.
“Why is it a problem if I curse Xavier? Lily always complains about him to me!” Maryanne frowned, clearly unhappy with Terence’s criticism.
At the entrance of the gated community, the security gate didn’t automatically open.
Terence stopped the car, unbuckled his seatbelt, and got out of the car. He walked up to the security guard and handed him a cigarette. The security guard appeared to be in his late 50s or early 60s.
“You’re not a resident here, are you?” asked the security guard.
Terence nodded. “No, I came to visit a friend.”
The security guard accepted the cigarette, lit it, and took a puff. “There was an incident yesterday with a resident losing something. From now on, non–residents aren’t allowed in.”
It wasn’t just cars; even pedestrians were restricted too
Terence seemed to pick up on the hint. “Alright, thanks,” he replied politely.
In exchange for the cigarette, the guard lifted the barrier with a friendly nod.
A Maybach was parked right outside the gated community. When the SUV finally made its way out, Xavier finally spoke up. “Let’s go.”
Moments later, Xavier’s phone rang–it was Sarah.
“Xavier, Mrs. Fulton asked to meet me at 8:00 am tomorrow morning.”
Xavier’s grip on his phone tightened instinctively. “Okay.”
Sarah hesitated briefly before she continued, “Have you two cleared things up yet?”
“There’s nothing to clear up between us.” He leaned his head against the car seat as he felt a headache start to form.
He couldn’t help but feel frustrated about how his once–orderly life was now in complete disarray, thanks to Lily.
“I just feel as if Mrs. Fulton still has unresolved feelings. She told me she wanted to talk. I suggested we should meet at a nearby cafe, but she insisted we meet at our villa. I–I don’t want to cause you any trouble…”
Considering how Lily and Xavier had come to the point of divorce, it was obvious that they lacked communication. Therefore, Sarah didn’t even need to think twice before stirring things up. Her words carried an implied meaning–she was worried that Lily’s behavior might cause a public scandal, damaging Xander’s reputation.
However, Xavier knew Lily well enough. “She won’t make a scene. Just tell her whatever she wants to know.”
He had no patience left for small talk, so he hung up.
He was curious to see how Lily would convince Sarah to return to Nova Group. He also wanted to see just how serious she was about the divorce.
The next morning, Lily arrived at Glenview Villa at 8:00 am sharp. However, no one came to open the door even after she rang the doorbell. Just as she was about to knock on the door, it opened slightly.
A woman wearing a black lace nightgown stood in the small gap. Then, the door opened fully, revealing Sarah in her sleepwear.
She then turned around and took a step backward.
“Please change your shoes.” As she spoke, she grabbed a pair of slippers from the cabinet and tossed them on the floor.
The slippers landed on Lily’s feet. She lowered her gaze to glance at them.
