Chapter 37
A dull ache spread in Lily’s forehead, and warm blood streamed down her face. She only saw red when she opened her eyes. Black smoke billowed from the front of her car, and she couldn’t help but think about online videos of cars exploding after an accident.
Was she going to die there today? But how could she die when Hayden still wasn’t free? With Xavier’s temper in mind, Lily wasn’t confident whether Xavier would continue the lawsuit in Hayden’s defense if she were dead.
That was her only motivation to survive. So, she unfastened her seatbelt, opened the door, and crawled out of the car.
Two hours later, Lily was awoken by someone shouting at her. Her eyes peeled open to see a blinding white light shining onto her.
“Thank goodness, you’re finally away, Miss!” A doctor in a white coat sighed in relief. “How are you feeling?”
The intense smell of disinfectant stung Lily’s nostrils. She gradually snapped back to reality and recalled what had happened. When she raised a hand to touch her forehead, an unbearable pang of pain struck her senses.
“Don’t move. You have a slight concussion and require proper rest to recover. We’ve already tried contacting your family, but they didn’t answer. Do you have any other family members?” said the doctor.
He brought Lily’s phone over and unlocked it with Lily’s fingerprint.
The call history page showed the doctor had made around eight phone calls to Xavier. However, Xavier never answered.
Lily had saved Xavier’s contact name as “Husband.” She didn’t save Bobby’s or Hazel’s phone numbers. Because of that, the doctor couldn’t find anyone else who seemed like they would be her family.
“I…” Lily’s voice was hoarse when she tried to speak. She knew nothing would change even if she called now. After all, Xavier hadn’t answered the previous eight calls. There was no telling if Xavier and Sarah were already asleep at this hour.
“Do you not have any other family or friends?” The doctor was impatient. “We need someone to come over and sign the consent form. Only then can we perform further health checks to see if you have internal bleeding in your head.”
Lily wasn’t entirely conscious and couldn’t sign the consent form herself. She had no choice but to click on Maryanne’s phone number. “You can call her.”
The doctor did so at once.
Maryanne rushed into Silverstone Hospital’s emergency room in less than 30 minutes. Her long, red hair was messy like she had no time to brush it. She nearly cried after seeing Lily, whose face was half–covered in blood.
“What happened to you?” asked Maryanne.
Lily had shut her eyes to rest while waiting for Maryanne to arrive. She awoke now. She felt more awake and aware than before.
She shook her head to soothe Maryanne. “It was a car accident, but it didn’t kill me. Don’t worry.”
“Where’s Xavier? Why were you alone when it’s already so late?” Maryanne knew Lily had to accompany Xavier to Fulton Manor for dinner every Saturday.
She could tell Lily had likely gotten into the accident on the drive home from Fulton Manor. That said, she didn’t understand why Xavier wasn’t with Lily.
That was when a weary Terence appeared from behind Maryanne. “Maryanne, keep her company and comfort her. I’m going to talk with the doctor.”
His dark gaze settled on Lily as he told her, “Let’s get you checked up. We’ll discuss any further actions after they examine you.”
The mention of Xavier set off a bitterness in Lily. Her heart couldn’t help but pound with such overwhelming emotions that it prevented her from saying anything. She frowned deeply because of it, and she was tremendously uncomfortable because of the pain from her wounds.
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop asking about it. Hurry up and fill in the necessary forms, Terence…” Maryanne wiped a tear from her eyes as she held Lily’s hand. She said to her, “It’s going to be okay.”
Lily completed her in–depth check–up an hour later. Nothing was wrong apart from a slight concussion and a less–than–an–inch wound on Lily’s forehead.
“The patient is recommended to remain at the hospital for two days so we can monitor her condition. If all is well after that, she can be discharged.” The doctor filled in Lily’s medical history form while reminding Lily about some things to pay attention to.
He later added, “She’s lucky to have made it out with only a slight concussion, unlike her totaled car. It’s also a good thing she wasn’t in a serious condition. Otherwise, she may have perished if her husband remained unreachable…”
Having done all the hectic procedures, Lily was fully awake and had regained total consciousness. She no longer felt dizzy, save for her slight headache. She couldn’t care less about that last part the doctor said now that she knew she was fine.
Instead, she asked the doctor, “Can I refuse to be hospitalized?”
