Evelyn asked in a low voice. “At that time, didn’t you see anyone else?”
“No! It was just me at that time. I even had to run a second time to bring down your luggage. What happened, Evelyn? By the way, how did you end up fainting in the corridor!”
Evelyn shook her head gently. A pang of sadness hit her. “It’s nothing”
It seemed that all her strength had been drained away. Zoey stood still for a while, and when she saw that Evelyn made no other moves, she quietly left.
As soon as Zoey came downstairs, she saw a tall man sitting on the sofa. Zoey suddenly frowned and cautiously moved toward the kitchen.
However, the man on the sofa, her brother Felix, having evidently become aware of her movements, said coldly. “Zoey, why do you bring someone home without permission?”
Zoey immediately stood still and pouted her lips, walking in front of the man. “Felix, that’s Evelyn, not someone else.”
Zoey set the dishes down, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes, and playfully attempted to sit on Felix’s lap. To her surprise, Felix swiftly guided her to sit properly on the couch instead, then stood up and carried the dishes to the kitchen. Left speechless on the couch, she watched Felix meticulously cleaning up. Under her breath, she grumbled, her expression filled with mock resentment.
When Felix re-entered the room, he was greeted by Zoey’s sullen glare and her slumped figure on the couch. Furrowing his brows, he chided her, “Show some manners when you sit, Zoey!”
In her head, Zoey was listing all her grievances against him, silently cursing. His stern command snapped her out of it, and she sat up straight with her hands on her knees, looking very proper. It hit her then how timid she had appeared, and she couldn’t help but get flustered. “Felix, you’re always so tough on me!”
“I am your elder brother! Can’t I discipline you? Felix gave Zoeya light, fleeting glance.
This glance made Zoey’s anger subside. Zoey kept mumbling something..
Felix could guess what was probably going on Zoey was, no doubt, grumbling about him. He picked up the newspaper from the table, trying to return to his reading, but the sound of his sister’s murmuring was too distracting. He unfolded the paper with a snap and nudged Zoey gently with his foot. “How about you go check on your guest?”
“Shouldn’t you be the one to check on her?” Zoey asked, her face full of earnestness.
Felix spared her a glance and then went back to his paper, a trace of bemusement in his gaze. “Why should I? That’s your friend, so it’s your responsibility.”
“What if I tell you she’s a knockout? Zoey teased. “One of a kind. How come you’re even more standoffish since you got back from overseas? My friend is your friend too, right?”
Felix looked away, responding in silence.
Feeling defeated, Zoey stood up, eyeing Felix for a moment before huling softly. “Felix, you’ve become so dull! How did Dad end up raising someone so unlike me?”
Felix’s mouth twitched in annoyance at her complaint, and he sent another playful kick her way. It stung a little, and Zoey massaged her leg gently
“Looks to me like you’re the one who isn’t much like a Harper, Felix retorted. “Dad’s been too lenient with you, letting you
up with the entertainment world so early. It’s nonsense.”
