Chapter 6
Caleb finally agreed through gritted teeth, “Fine! Don’t hurt the woman you’ve got. I’ll meet your demands!”
Ava was in the lanky guy’s clutches, and not far from her was Evelyn.
“You’ve got thirty minutes, taunted the kidnapper. “If the cash isn’t here, you’ll be attending their funeral!”
Caleb shot a fierce look at the man but kept quiet and headed off to find Michael Taylor the police captain.
He wasn’t planning to pay a cent; he was working with Michael to figure out how to take down the kidnappers without Ava getting hurt.
Michael surveyed the terrain and shook his head. “Mr. Mercer, we don’t have a clear shot from above. It’s too risky. We could hit the hostages.
I need to save just one. The other doesn’t matter to me, Caleb stated without a hint of concern, eyeing the map closely.
Michael was shocked. That ‘other’ hostage was none other than Evelyn, from the high-profile Brin family, and Caleb’s wife. Why would she ‘not matter? But, this was no time to delve into their family affairs.
They devised a plan to strike the kidnappers unexpectedly and rescue the hostages unscathed.
Now that night had fallen, it worked in the police’s favor, allowing them to move around undetected by the darkness.
Meanwhile, on the factory roof, the kidnappers made their final threat. They were ready to risk a jump with the hostages if any police got too close. A drop from that height could end in a life sentence to a wheelchair even if they survived.
Under the cover of darkness, a policeman made a stealthy approach to where the kidnappers stood guard. Seizing a moment of distraction, he tackled the lanky kidnapper to the ground, sending the man off balance as he tried and failed to stab Ava. She dove out of the way, rolled to her feet, and ran toward Caleb.
Furious at the turn of events, the lanky kidnapper shouted to his partner, “Kill her, now!”
The big guy, fuming about his boss getting tackled, swung wildly with his knife yelling. “Go to hell, all of you!”
As he raised his knife, the police took their chance and fired, hitting him right in the knife hand.
But just when Evelyn thought she was out of danger, the big guy pulled out a hidden knife and stabbed her. The police didn’t hesitate, taking the man down with one more shot. They imediately shouted for an ambulance as they rushed over to her.

was released; her face was as white as a ghost; life seemed to drain out of her, and she collapsed.
As she fell, her eyes locked onto Caleb who was comforting Ava, One of the officers turned to him and asked, “Mr. Mercer that woman is hurt. Do you know her?”
His response seemed to come from far away, “No, can’t say I do. She’s a stranger to me.”
In that critical moment, Evelyn realized the bitter truth. The man she had loved for years had nothing but indifference for her as she teetered on the edge of life and death
As the aftermath settled, Caleb left with Ava by his side, leaving the factory behind. Evelyn lay alone and injured, soon to be whisked away in an ambulance.
Evelyn was rushed to the hospital, her life hanging by a thread after the kidnapper had stabbed her real bad. Lying in the surgery room, she couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened.

Caleb told the police she was just a stranger to him….

She thought about everything they had shared-nine years together, five years married-gone, just like that. To him, she was just a nobody.
It hit her hard, realizing all the love she had given was never felt by anyone but herself.
Any hope that Caleb cared about her was crushed
The harsh truth was staring her in the face. How could anyone be so cold? She couldn’t believe it. Wouldn’t most folks try to help even someone they didn’t know, let alone their wife?
But Caleb, just watched her suffer, watched her bleed out, and didn’t even blink.
And that got her thinking, maybe betting everything on him was the biggest mistake of her life.
