Chapter 53
Evelyn and Aron locked the door and went to have lunch together. Aron drove Evelyn home. On the way, he was silent for at long time before he seemed to ask casually, “Evelyn, why did you divorce Caleb in the first place?”
The question hit Evelyn out of the blue, stirring up a storm of unwanted memories. She reflexively rested her hand on her abdomen, a phantom ache reminding her of what had been A few years back, after passing out at work, Bobby rushed her to the ER. There, she had discovered she was two months pregnant, She had been ecstatic, excitedly sharing the news with Caleb, only for him to firmly insist on terminating the pregnancy
Evelyn took a deep breath and answered with a forced lightness, “Oh, we just weren’t right for each other, and it didn’t work out Why do you ask. Aron?”
She didn’t want to delve into those memories, not wanting to seem like she was seeking sympathy–something she was sure she didn’t need.
Aron’s gaze fell, and he let out a sigh. “No reason, really, Just making conversation.”
He wanted to know what Evelyn’s current attitude towards Caleb was, and he was definitely going to take revenge on the Mercer family,
However, if Evelyn still cared about Caleb, he could only… deal with Evelyn as well.
An evil idea popped up in Aron’s mind. Perhaps he could imprison Evelyn. In that way, she wouldn’t have the chance to interfere with his great endeavor of revenge.
“Aron?” Evelyn sat in the passenger seat, Upon seeing her home, the unbuckled her seatbelt and got ready to get out of the car. However, the door was locked. Evelyn turned her head in confusion, noticing Aron staring expressionlessly ahead.
Puzzled, she wondered what was up with him. Lately, he’d become harder to read–kind of unpredictable. Every once in a while, Aron would give her this look that sent a shiver down her spine, although he always snapped out of it and came back with a gentle response.
ealizing his oversight, Aron turned to her, his mood shifting as he ran a comforting hand through her hair. “My bad, Evelyn. Just got lost in thought there.” he said with his usual gentle grin. “Go on up. Catch you later..
Seeing his smile, the one she knew so well, Evelyn let out a silent breath of relief. Maybe it was nothing. Perhaps Aron was just readjusting after moving back home, maybe work was wearing on him. Why did she even have that weird notion that he could be a threat to her? With a self–deprecating shake of her head, she chided herself for being paranoid.
She got out of the car, took a few steps, and then turned back. She said with a worried expression, “Aron, have you been too busy recently? You need to make sure to rest. I will have Bobby help you out these next couple of days. Don’t tire yourself

“Just head on up,” Aron replied with a small nod, reassuring her with a smile. “I’ve got this, Evelyn.”
He kept his warm facade until she disappeared into the building, Once she was out of sight, his expression cooled. He glanced down at the text that had buzzed in on his phone: [Caleb’s looking to unload a bunch of weapons. This could be your chance
The message was anonymous, and a quick investigation by John traced it back to a burner phone in some convenience store. Was Caleb trying to clean up his act, to distance himself from the murky world of arms dealing?
