The girl seemed to hang on Evelyn’s every drawn–out word, tension etched across her face. When Evelyn’s playful charade became apparent, embarrassment rushed to the girl’s cheeks, coloring her with a hint of anger.

Realizing her joke might have been a bit too much, Evelyn’s smile faded and she hurriedly ushered the girl inside to take a seat. Pouring her a cup of water, she asked with genuine concern, “Are you okay? Feeling any better?”
The girl took a few sips and seemed to relax. Relief washed over Evelyn as she let out a quiet chuckle. It was just like when they were kids, with Evelyn finding delight in a bit of harmless teasing. Still, she hadn’t meant to push the joke to the brink.
