Chapter 4
Caleb let go of her face and sneered, “Weren’t you the one who wanted a baby? Didn’t you marry me after a night with me? Trying to play it both ways, Evelyn, that’s pretty low!”
Evelyn closed her eyes, feeling so sad she couldn’t even speak. She just lay there, crying silently, the pillow soaking up her
tears
Hearing those harsh words from the person she cared about most was heartbreaking, making it hard to even breathe.
Seeing her so quiet a
and not fighting back annoyed Caleb somehow. He mumbled something rude to himself and turned her away from him, avoiding seeing her face.
Without taking off his clothes or caring about how Evelyn felt. Caleb just made out with her and quickly left afterward, not bothering to look at her.
Left alone, Evelyn stayed curled up in bed, feeling all alone with her sadness. Caleb had been really rough. Any small movement just hurt too much. She cried until she finally fell asleep from exhaustion.
By the time she woke up again, the sun was already shining brightly outside. She felt a tiny bit stronger and managed to get up. While she was straightening out the bed, she noticed the stains on the sheets, a silent testament to how rough the previous night had been.
The following day, Evelyn walked into the local coffee shop, her face a shade paler than usual. The shop was almost empty, a lull before the crowd. She paused at the entrance, scanned the place, and then slipped over to a quiet corner to take a seat.
Before too long. Ava strolled in with sunglasses on, exuding confidence. She made a beeline for Evelyn and scoffed, “So, Ms. Brin, sitting pretty in the role of Mrs. Mercer, huh?”
After Evelyn and Caleb’s big fight yesterday, Ava must come to her to make it worse.
But facing Ava now, Evelyn couldn’t deny it-Ava had grown from a naive girl into someone with the vibe of a cool, confident woman. And that must be why Caleb was still hung up on her.
With just a casual smile, Evelyn shot back. “That’s none of your business, Ms. Loser.
Ava wasn’t letting up. “Feeling good about taking my place? Has Caleb ever cooked just for you, or really thought about a gift he got you? Sure, you’re his wife, but where’s your ring after all these years? Wake up, Evelyn. You’re not going to hold on to this life. I’ll be Mrs. Mercer again and get back all that should be mine!”
Evelyn laughed, “Dream on, Ava.” She was not about to waste her time on Ava’s trash talk. She brushed right by her and walked out
Ava was only there to be mean, and Evelyn wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of sticking around.
Evelyn had just left the coffee shop and was walking down the street without a clue that a van was following her.
In the van, the kidnappers were watching and waiting for their chance. As soon as the van stopped, they jumped out. One snuck up behind her, covered her mouth with a wet cloth, and muffled her screams. The other tied her hands fast and dragged her into the van.
The whole thing was over in less than a minute.
Evelyn barely had time to realize what was happening when she found herself tied up tightly, feeling dizzy as the chemical on the cloth started to make her head spin. She’d never thought he’d be the one kidnapped.

When she woke up later, her head was covered, and it was pitch dark. Suddenly, the cover was ripped off, and a glaring light hit her eyes. At first, she could hardly see. But as her vision came back, she spotted Ava tied up too, just like her.
