Her Heart 3

Chapter 3
Ava ducked behind Caleb, putting on quite the act while playing the peacemaker. “Caleb, please don’t, Evelyn didn’t mean any harm.”
Evelyn rose with grace, gathering her scattered stuff and fixed Ava with a hard look. “Save your breath. No matter how good you are at faking it, you can’t hide the fact that you’re the homewrecker.
Caleb snapped and smacked her across the face, “Evelyn, get your head out of the clouds-you really think you’re Mrs.
Mercer?
The slap was so powerful it made Evelyn’s ears buzz and her world spin before she crashed to the floor. Her hair fell over her face, hiding the mess on her cheeks,
Ava stood over her, a smug grin on her face, her eyes sparkling with jealousy and spite
If it hadn’t been for Evelyn’s interference, she would’ve married Caleb already!
The scene caused quite a stir, attracting a nosy crowd. Suddenly, from the throng, someone yelled, “Hey, it’s Ava! Ava Davenport’s right here!”
At that shout, Ava’s heart skipped a beat. As an international superstar, her public image was priceless. She scrambled into Caleb’s arms, begging him to save her image.
Caleb felt a rush of protectiveness, set on keeping her image spotless. Quickly, he took off his jack head, barking at the crowd, “No cameras! If I catch anyone spreading photos or videos of this, trust me, Caleb Mercer won’t
and threw it over her let you off the hook!”
The hospital was alive with noise, but his command cut through it all, and the place fell silent.
The Mercer family were big shots in Clovia; just their name made the whole city think twice before messing with them, especially ordinary folks.
With Caleb’s impressive build and the vibe he gave off, the looky-loos got the message. The crowd thinned out, making way
for them.
Caleb walked out with Ava, completely ignoring his wife who lay on the floor, abandoned and defeated.
Evelyn just sat there on the floor, feeling like a total mess. A couple of people tried to help her up, but she just shook her head no.
She didn’t want anyone to see her like that, totally embarrassed
That slap had smashed any hope she had left and totally broke her heart.
Looking down. Evelyn got up and went toward the hospital entrance. Then, out of nowhere, she bumped into her big brother Jason and her dad Brian, who was in a wheelchair.
Quickly, she hid the red mark from the slap with her hair.
“Hey, Dad, Jason,” she said.
Brian, looking all serious in his wheelchair, snorted, “Don’t talk to me. The Brin family wants nothing to do with a daughter who messes up like you!”
Jason, pushing the wheelchair, was just as cold. “Ms. Brin, Dad disowned you live years ago. Next time you see us, remember
your manners.”

With that, they went into the hospital, leaving Evelyn all alone.
As she watched them go, her nails bit into her hands, and her heart hurt so much.
She kept thinking. if only she hadn’t let her family down, if only she hadn’t messed up their dreams for her, then maybe she wouldn’t be in such a mess. She knew she was the only one to blame for how things went south.
Late at night, Caleb burst into the room, bringing a gust of chilly air with him. He went straight to her bed, grabbed her ankle, and pulled her toward him. The cold snap woke Evelyn up, and when she saw it was Caleb, she was confused. “Caleb, what’s wrong? Why are you….
“Be quiet!” He glared at her and didn’t let her finish. “You wanted a baby? Fine, we’ll do this your way!”
“No, not now, Caleb, please… she whispered, scared.
She still didn’t feel better after the abortion that had happened only two days ago..
Caleb leaned down and held her face, his eyes fierce and serious. Not now? You had the nerve to stand up to me at the hospital. You were all brave back there, and now you’re scared?”
Tears started to run down Evelyn’s face in the dim light of the room. “Caleb, please, I’m asking you, not tonight. I just can’t.”
