Chapter 27
The air was thick with awkwardness as Ava faced rejection yet again. She had goofed up the night before, almost spilling the brams to Caleb about badmouthing Evelyn.
Hoping to smooth things over. Ava rose at dawn and made a special breakfast, then took it over to Caleb’s place early. She waited outside, filled with hope, until she finally heard footsteps inside after a long while.
Caleb opened the door. Ava held out the food, eyes locked on his indifferent expression. “Caleb, you drank a lot last night. Wanna something to eat? I made you some food”
Standing there, Caleb seemed annoyed.
“I’m not in the mood. Take it back.” he said, starting to shut the door.
Ava clutched the box tighter, her lip quivering, eyes brimming with tears. “Caleb, I worked hard on this. Look, it even blistered my hands.”“
She played up her crying, which usually worked on him, hoping it would change his mind. But this time, Caleb didn’t budge. He frowned slightly but finally took the box.
“Okay, I’ll eat it later,” he said roughly. “Colin will take you to the studio, and you can grab some ointment on your way.”
Caleb didn’t give Ava’s disappointed face another glance. He closed the door and disappeared inside his house.
Caleb as he tossed the thermal box on a side table and settled by the window, Lighting up a cigarette, he took a long drag.
Back in the day. Ava’s tears used to get to Caleb, making him swoop in to comfort her. But lately, those feelings had turned sour. Ava’s crying routine now just got on his nerves, and his fondness for her was slipping away.
Touching his cheek, he felt the sting of a memory. “Evelyn,” he whispered, a mix of feelings swirling inside him. What was going on with him?
The silence was thick around Ava after the door closed, leaving her alone with her frustration and helplessness. Another angry thought about Evelyn crossed her mind the woman she blamed for her misery. Biting back her anger, Ava gave the door a furious kick and then headed off to the movie set.
Her trip to Irinland, which was actually for filming, had gotten more complicated because of Caleb’s trip to Romaine. Seeing him there brought back the memory of those photos, and she couldn’t resist following him.
Ava was the second tead in the martial arts movie, but her role was tough. She was covered in bruises from the intense action scenes. When Colin got orders to bring her some ointment, he made his way backstage.
Ava was busy with the day’s tough stunts, so Colin didn’t find a chance to talk to her and had to wait in the lounge.
His unique looks and charm drew some glances from the actresses there, making him feel-out of place. Preferring to avoid the attention, he headed back to the set, keeping an eye on things for Caleb.
Right then, Colin saw Ava fall from the stunt wires.
“Ava fell!”
“Call for an ambulance! Get her to the hospital! Now!”
The crew rushed to help, and the director stopped the day’s shot to take care of Ava.
