Chapter 21

After his call with Evelyn, Aron sensed something off about her voice. Just a minute later, he tried calling back to suggest she
take some medicine.
But he kept hitting her voicemail. No answers, multiple tries. Aron figured it wasn’t just about a **y pepper.
He drove to her hotel and with the help of the staff, got into her room. There was Evelyn, face fiery red and knocked out on the bed.
“Evelyn”” Aron panicked, lifted her, and rushed to the nearest hospital.
The doctor said she was out cold from not taking it easy after a miscarriage, mixed with some old injury issues. Topping it off with alcohol and cold air was just too much.
“Miscarriage? A kidney gone?”
Aron was spinning, looking at Evelyn lying there out cold, hooked up to machines. She was married? Had lost a baby? And her kidney. He was clueless about any birth issues with Evelyn.
The doc guessed it was a recent thing, maybe an adrenal glitch that led to cutting out her kidney.
“Absolutely no drinking with her condition, the doctor made it clear. “She’s delicate and this, with a cold, is a world of hurt. She needs serious downtime to recover.”
After the doctor left, Aron sat by the hospital bed and watched Evelyn sleep, her face reflecting distress even in slumber. She was a ghostly shade of pale.
He flicked through his phone to a report John had recently dug up on Evelyn’s career. She was the boss at Evelyn Jewelry, something that made him pause and then empathize deeply.
Since Aron had left Glovia years ago, he had missed a lot. Evelyn got married to Caleb. And shockingly, Caleb forced her to end her pregnancy. As if that wasn’t rough enough, during a kidnapping, where she should’ve been saved by Caleb, she way left behind and got stabbed in the kidney. The o****n was so wrecked, it had to be taken out to save her life.
“Evelyn” Aron whispered, his voice echoing with a touch of sorrow.
Staring at the fragile figure wrapped in hospital sheets, Aron felt his grudge against Caleb deepened. The Mercer family had stripped him of his family, and now, they had also turned Evelyn’s life upside down
When Evelyn slowly opened her eyes, she caught the intensity of Aron’s stare and the weight of his gloom. It was a lot for her to take in. Laced with confusion, she called out to him, “Aron?”
As Evelyn’s faint voice reached him, Aron’s frosty attitude thawed a little, but he kept a stern face and said, “Do you see what’s happened? Don’t you realize you’re not in good shape? Going to a bar and lying about it? Evelyn, do I seem like someone who shouldn’t be concerned?”
Despite his stern look and sharp tone, they comforted Evelyn-he wasn’t sure how much Aron knew about her health issues, but all this made her feel cared for and valued
She flashed a tired but grateful smile. “Thanks, Aron
Her thanks washed away some of Aron’s anger, and he pushed the nurse’s call button with a sigh
“So, Aron, when’s the mixer?”
Since alcohol had put her in this hospital bel, that word mixer didn’t sit well with him. Aron asked in anger, “Mixer? You’re not thinking about having drinks, are you?”
