“Ms. Brin, there’s still a chance for kids later on, the nurse said, trying to be comforting.
But it did nothing to fill the emptiness inside Evelyn. Using all the strength she could muster, Evelyn slowly left the operating room with help from the nurse. The hospital halls were empty and quiet-the kind of quiet that felt as cold and empty as she did inside.
Evelyn tried to force a smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. The little life that had been growing inside her was now gone, leaving her with a sharp pain that didn’t make any sense.
The baby was gone. That news would probably make him happy, He’d never wanted the baby anyway. Now, he could show off his real love without anything holding him back.
Suddenly, a wave of exhaustion hit Evelyn so hard it nearly knocked the wind out of her.
The ring of her phone pulled her out of it for a second. She wiped her eyes, tried to pull herself together, and answered the call
“Come home,” said the icy voice on the other end.
She didn’t get to say anything back before he hung up. Evelyn let out a dry laugh. It was pretty obvious he couldn’t care less about her anymore, he didn’t even bother to say a single more word.
At Metro Garden, Evelyn came home and found Caleb Mercer lounging on the fancy sofa, lazy and distant. A cigarette was in his hand, and a cold look was on his face.
On the coffee table, there was just one piece of paper-a divorce agreement. The bold title felt like a punch in the gut.
Just sign it. Caleb said, his voice cold.
He didn’t look at her with any of the warmth a husband might have; he was distant, like he was in another world.
Fighting back tears, Evelyn could barely get the words out. “I just had an operation to lose our baby and you’re rushing to divorce me”
Caleb shot her a look that was dripping with disgust. “It’s for the best. You weren’t fit to be the mother of my child.” Evelyn let out a bitter, empty laugh.
She was right. Caleb couldn’t wait to be rid of the baby.
With pne hand chilling in his pocket, he glanced at her like she was just some stranger, not the woman he married. “Avy back. It’s time for you to step aside.”
Step aside? Evelyn didn’t owe anything to Ava Davenport. Why should she give up anything?
With a rare burst of courage, she spoke up, I don’t think so!”
But her bold move was crushed fast. Caleb’s hand was on her neck, pinning her against the wall, his eyes filled with a mean sparkle. “You think you have a say, Evelyn? If you hadn’t tricked me into this, do you really think you’d ever be my wife?”
Evelyn’s face turned bright red, struggling for air, and finally. Caleb let go. She crumpled to the ground, gasping and coughing until she could breathe again.
His words had wounded her deeply.
To him, she was just a schemer who had snuck her way into his life, trashing his relationship with Ava.

All he had for her was disgust.
Evelyn lifted her head, fighting the tears and faked a smile. “You know what? Even if I’m not Mrs. Mercer, Ava won’t be either. You want a divorce so bad? Fine, call up your mom and check if she’s okay with that.”
It was Ava who messed with their drinks that night, but she twisted the whole story to make Evelyn look like the bad
Before long, everyone was talking about how Evelyn trapped Caleb Mercer, throwing away all her dignity.

When her father got wind of the story, he was so heated he almost kicked her out of the family. Her mother was struck with such fury over the scandal that she collapsed and passed away on the spot. Her brother held Evelyn responsible for their mom’s death and hadn’t let it go even to this day.
When it came to dirty tricks, Ava was in a completely different league.
