Chapter 67
“Our boss is out for the next couple of days. He’ll be back Wednesday afternoon,” the interviewer explained when he noticed Victoria’s hesitation. “If you’re available, we can schedule your final interview for 1:00 pm that day.”
“I’m available,” Victoria replied.
Laura’s surgery was this afternoon. Even if there were complications, she’d have all of Tuesday to deal with them.
She had no idea how much the post–surgery care would cost, so securing this job was crucial. She just hoped Leon wouldn’t interfere this time.
As soon as the interview ended, Victoria rushed to the hospital. The surgery wasn’t until the afternoon, but she couldn’t stop worrying
It was around 11:00 am when she arrived. Leslie greeted her briefly, his tone no different from usual “You’ve been informed about the surgery, right?
“Yes.” Victoria sat across from him, her usually soft gaze clouded with worry. “What are the chances?”
“,“he answered honestly.
Victoria’s hear tightened.
For years, Laura had been lying in bed, unresponsive. Although she couldn’t reply to anything Victoria said, her occasional reflexive movements were enough to remind Victoria that she was still alive. But if the surgery failed, Laura would have to rely on a ventilator for life.
Victoria didn’t dare think about that possibly.
“We’ll do everything we can to save your mother,” Leslie said gently, his voice soothing. Over the years, he had witnessed Victoria’s unwavering devotion to Laura. “God blesses the good people.”
“Use whatever is necessary during the operation. Don’t worry about whether I can afford it. I’ll find a way to pay for it later,” Victoria said, forcing a smile.
She low well that talk of “God” was just a comfort, nothing more.
Leslie parted his lips slightly. But in the end, he simply said, “Alright”
Before informing Victoria about the surgery, he had already informed Leon.
Leon had immediately transferred one million dollars to the hospital’s account, instructing Leslie to ensure the best possible care for Laura.
There was only one condition–Victoria couldn’t know about the money. She had to believe that she was solely responsible for covering the costs.
Leslie didn’t understand Leon’s motives, but taking money and doing the job was standard practice. As a doctor, the only thing he could do was ensure the best care for his patient. “You should go grab some lunch, he told her, regaining his composure. “The surgery starts at 2:00 pm.”
Victoria agreed, but she had no appetite with the surgery looming Instead, she went to Laura’s ward and sat by the bed. She kept talking softly to Laura, who had been asleep for so long
Leslie watched her through the observation window but didn’t internupt. He didn’t try to consule her either.
The afternoon came quickly, and Laura was wheeled into the operating room. The moment the red light above the door lit up, Victoria’s heart clenched with tear
“Worrying won’t change anything” A light, playful voice suddenly sounded.
Eva, dressed imprecably, appeared from around the comer, “Instead of sitting here, you’d be better off making some money for her medical bills.”
Victoria didn’t even look at her. She was too preoccupied to care why Ewa was here. Right now, all she could do was pray for a successful surgery.
“I heard about your mom’s surgery from Leon, Eva said as she took a seat beside her.
Victoria let out a silent scoff. Of course, Leon had told her everything
“I’m here not just to see how the surgery goes, Eva continued, her tone shifting from les usual sarcasm to something more serious. “I also want to propose a deal that would
bear
both of us.”
“Did you not see the ‘No Loud Taking notice on the wall Victoria said coldly, her dislike for Eva evident.
