Chapter 6 That Jerk Had Passed Away
Pieces of paper fluttered onto the floor. Judith, in disbelief, yelled at the crazed Olivia, “You little bitch! What’s that supposed to mean?”
She tried to hit Olivia, but Olivia had quickly hidden behind Keith.
Olivia smugly said to me, “There are no more divorce papers! Grayson is still your husband! Why don’t you take care of that loser?”
Even I did not expect Olivia to make this move.
With trembling hands, Judith let out a shrill scream and threw herself at Olivia. It took a few policemen to hold her back.
“Grayson is crippled because of you! Didn’t you claim that Alex is Grayson’s child? Do you really want to date another man when you’re raising my grandson?”
Judith’s hand slid out of the gap between the policemen in an attempt to reach and claw at Olivia.
When realizing that Judith was no threat, Olivia lashed out at her. “A loser like Grayson could never father an awesome son like Alex! Get lost!”
I was surprised to learn that Grayson had been cheated on. I could only wonder if his heart rate would spike when he learned about that news.
“Stop it, ladies!” Keith, who was the older policeman, called his colleagues into the office when things began to spiral out of control.
Only then did they manage to put a stop to the debacle.
“Enough. As he police, it’s not our duty to figure out the paternity of your son. But as of now, Ms. Mendel is not legally required to look after Mr. Rockwell, who’s in the hospital.”
Keith turned to me. “Since the divorce papers are destroyed, you are still Mr. Rockwell’s legal spouse. As such, the caretaking duties will fall on you.”
Right after that, both I and Judith received a text notification.
I lamented, “Am I still his legal spouse? Well, feel sorry for Ms. Mendel now.”
I had received a notification from the hospital, informing me that Grayson was officially declared brain dead after his condition suddenly deteriorated. In other words, he was nothing more than a breathing corpse.
I waved my phone at Olivia with a look of pity. “Sorry to hear that, Ms. Mendel.”
We rushed to the hospital after receiving the update. Two policemen followed suit, just in case we caused a scene at the hospital.
Crying and wailing, Judith flung herself at the attending physician, cursing him out, “Damn it! Grayson was fine when I left! You guys killed my dear son!”
The doctor looked rather regretful, at the same time shielding the junior doctors and nurses behind him. He took on Judith’s wrath alone, despite going days without sleep to save Grayson’s life.
I pushed aside Judith–who had been acting irrationally–and shook the doctor’s hand with much regret. “You have done a lot for Grayson. I agree to donate his body to advance medical research.”
Feeling touched by my selfless decision, the middle–aged doctor who led the effort solemnly nodded at me with teary eyes. He turned around, instructing the junior doctors to remove Grayson’s organs that were available for transplant.
Well, I considered it waste recycling.
At the same time, Judith had slumped onto the floor. Crying, she hit her fists on the floor, calling me a sick woman.
“Sorry about that. As Grayson’s legal spouse, I’m the next of kin with decision–making authority.”
Olivia had never spoken once ever since she rode in the police car to the hospital–not until I brought up the fact that I was still Grayson’s wife.
“Heia, how dare you… play me like a fiddle?” she yelled at me while trembling in shock, her sentence truncated.
She appeared to be cross at how smooth my life was going.
“You only have Grayson to blame. He loves you too much.” I shook my head with regret. “Maybe he could sense that you were unwilling to marry him, but he did not want to be stuck with me. In the end, he chose death.”
Every word that came out of my mouth was like a stab to Olivia’s heart. After all, she was the one who had destroyed my divorce papers, meaning she just lost the tens of millions in inheritance.
“You… You–” She placed a hand over her chest in extreme anger as she struggled to form a complete sentence. In the end, her eyes rolled over, and she blacked out.
