Chapter 44
Garrett’s face flushed with embarrassment after Janice reprimanded him. Though he tried to speak, he found himself at a loss for words.
Reina was his beloved daughter, his pride and joy. He had always secured everything she desired. She had never endured such unfairness before.
Just then, the ward door was pushed open once more, and Malcolm and Kody entered together.
After observing the two, Malcolm frowned at Reina and asked coldly, “What’s going on?
Reina’s eyes filled with tears upon seeing Malcolm. She attempted to sit, but Garrett gently pressed her back down. “Stay still. The doctor has instructed
you to rest,”
She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face. “Malcolm, Janice misunderstood me.”
Janice sneered. “Misunderstood? The surveillance footage clearly shows everything. Are you still going to deny it?”
“What surveillance footage?” Malcolm asked, looking at Janice intently.
Janice inhaled deeply and set aside her frustration. She began to narrate the entire incident.
Malcolm was clearly upset by what he had just heard. He turned to Reina and asked icily, “Is she telling the truth?”
I didn’t…” Reina felt even more g guilty under his intense stare. She looked away and cried even more. “Malcolm, please believe me, Kody looked at Janice’s pale face and messy hair, feeling distressed. He turned to look at Garrett and Reina with an icy glare. “I’ll definitely find out the truth behind this. If you’re responsible, I won’t let you off easily!”
Garrett was seething with rage, his entire body trembling. He shouted, “Kody, what gives you the right to say that? This is the Ludwig family’s matter. As an outsider, you should stay out of it!”
Kody scoffed “Outsider? Janice is my friend, so her business is my business.”
Garrett was furious, shaking his finger at Kody in silence for a long time.
Kody approached Janice’s bed and asked with concern, “How are you feeling?”
Janice shook her head, her face ashen and her lips devoid of color. With a weary sigh, she closed her eyes for a moment. When she opened then again, a chilling detachment surfaced in her gaze.
“I’m fine.”
Kody gazed at her with concern. He understood that Janice was trying to hold herself together. Typically resilient, she rarely displayed vulnerability in front of others.
He gently held her hand and reassured her, “Janice, don’t be afraid. I’m here for you.”
Janice’s fingers instinctively curled, yearning to withdraw, but he gripped them firmly. She lifted her gaze to meet his concerned eyes, and a sudden warmth blossomed in her heart.
For the first time, she felt she wasn’t alone amidst the Ludwigs‘ terror and Malcolm’s indifference. Kody’s warmth enveloped her like a ray of sunshine cutting through the winter chill.
Holding his hand back with a faint smile, Janice replied, “Hmm. I’m not afraid.”
When Malcolm noticed the two of them holding hands, a surge of irritation welled up within him.
