Chapter 187
Vespera heard Dominic’s low voice.
That tone… did he know something about this?
She tilted her head to look up at him.
“Don’t look at me like that. You’re distracting me” Dominic said as his large hand gently pressed against her head, guiding her face back toward the holes.
She wondered just how she was looking at him.
Vespera had the sinking feeling she was being teased again. Helpless, she shifted her focus back to the scene next door.
Claire, her face streaked with ash, sat up shakily. She looked at Miranda, desperation etched across every line of her face. “Please save my daughter. I’ll do anything, and whatever it takes,.. I’ll do it.”
Miranda said nothing. Her face twisted in pain. It was like she was possessed, and then her
body began convulsing again.
The wooden plaques on the surrounding walls rattled even louder. One snapped in half with a loud crack. Meanwhile, the statue on the altar shattered, and the lights overhead flickered
violently.
Then, a strange voice–neither male nor female, not old or young–came howling out of Miranda’s mouth, “I died so horribly! I won’t forgive her! I want her dead! Dead!”
That last word echoed again and again, bouncing off every wall of the room, circling endlessly.
Claire was so terrified that she couldn’t even scream anymore.
“Dear… it’s trying to possess you… it wants to kill Mrs. Sowle… quick, stop it! Stop it now…‘ Miranda’s normal voice returned, ragged and weak.
Her assistant–Rebecca–immediately grabbed a cleaver. Then–who knew from where–she dragged in half a pig carcass, dropped it in front of Claire, and began hacking at it wildly.
Blood and flesh flew in every direction, some of it landing straight on Claire’s face. She started screamingain, crawling across the floor in a blind panic, unable to stand. Her nerves were frayed, barely hanging by a thread.
The two watching from the other side of the wall were thinking the same thing. “With this level of crazy, anyone would be scared out of their mind.”
Dominic leaned down and whispered in Vespera’s ear, “Where’d she learn this from?”
Vespera replied, “Movies. A witch from Korvia.”
CRUCE 187.
Which made her evermore mystical than Mandora’s so–called spiritual experts.
Rebecca finally finished hacking away at the pig and stepped back, exhausted.
And how could she not be? Dragging in half a pig jumping around like crazy, swinging a cleaver like a maniac… Even if Calvert does that, he’d probably cry from exhaustion.
Being a spiritual expert was basically a full–body workout.
“We’re done,” she muttered, wiping sweat from her brow and setting the knife down.
The room fell silent. It looked like it had been torn apart by something invisible. The place was in complete chaos.
Claire no longer cared about appearances. She crawled to Miranda’s feet, crying and begging in fear. “Please, Ms. Kinsman, help me!”
Miranda didn’t respond.
“Ms. Kinsman, say something! I can pay whatever it costs, it doesn’t matter! I’ll give you anything!” Claire grew even more frantic when Miranda stayed silent.
Miranda’s lips twitched like she was about to speak.
“Mrs. Sowle, you refuse to tell the truth, so please leave. Ms. Kinsman can’t help you,” Rebecca said, speaking in Miranda’s place.
Then, she added, “Even if you gave us a mountain of gold, it wouldn’t help.”
Miranda’s lips moved again as if she were holding something back. Her face was filled with a sorrowful kind of grief–pained and disappointed.
“I’ll talk! I’ll say everything! Ms. Kinsman, just give me one more chance! I won’t hide anything this time, I swear!” Claire cried, looking like a fish washed up on shore as she gasped for air. She was so terrified the color drained from her face.
Her eyes darted nervously around the room, like she could feel something watching her from
the shadows.
“Then spit it out!” Rebecca snapped. “If you trust Ms. Kinsman, you have to say everything! Otherwise, it won’t just be you who dies, we’ll all die!”
Every time someone said the word “die“, it pushed Claire’s nerves closer to the edge.
