Dominic leaned down and asked in a low voice, “How exactly is this destined?”
Vespera glanced at Belle walking ahead, then covered her mouth slightly as she whispered back, “I threw money at it.”
“What?” Dominic asked like he hadn’t heard her

Vespera was speechless. She cupped her hands and stood on tiptoe, leaning closer to his ear. Dominic cooperated, bending down toward her.
She practically whispered the words right into his ear. Her warm breath brushed against him. like feathers–soft and ticklish.
Dominic’s Adam’s apple moved slightly. Suddenly, he turned his head.
Caught off guard, Vespera met his eyes. She was already wobbling on her tiptoes–hard enough as it was–and the surprise made her falter.
Dominic caught her, arms slipping around her waist.
Then, mimicking her earlier move, he cupped his hand and leaned close to her ear, low and gentle. “How smart. You’re both rich and clever.”
A shiver ran from the top of Vespera’s head to the tips of her fingers and toes.

Caught off guard, Dominic threw a hand out to catch himself against the wall.
There was a line of copper coins hanging there, and the moment his hand hit them, it set off a chain reaction–a long clatter of coins echoing through the hall.
Vespera, wanting to deny whatever she had felt, quickly sped up her pace.
Yasmine and Calvert, behind them, had the same reaction. They were speechless.
He told them to keep it down, and now look who made the noise… and in such a dramatic way too. Not that either of them dared say anything.
Belle, who had been walking ahead, stopped and turned around. She caught sight of Dominic pulling his hand back from the wall.

The four of them sat down inside the room.
It seemed to be a lounge set up for guests. Besides the chairs and table, there were also drinks
and snacks laid out.
Vespera was still feeling a little uneasy after Dominic had startled her earlier. She waited for him to sit down first, then picked a spot that wasn’t too close or too far from him.
“Ve-” Yasmine started to say something, but Vespera cut her off with a raised hand.
She pulled a sticky note from her bag, scribbled a line, and passed it to Yasmine, along with a pen. The note read, “There might be bugs in here. Let’s write instead of talking.”
Yasmine nodded, wrote “Okay” under the line, and passed it to Calvert. He added his own ” Okay” before handing it off to Dominic.
Dominic read it and didn’t say anything, but that in itself was an agreement.
Calvert tapped the pen lightly as if saying, “Go on, write your Okay.”
Dominic ignored him.
Vespera watched as the pen and sticky note were passed around like a game of telephone and ended up with Dominic. She still had more to say, but he clearly wasn’t planning to hand it
back.
With no other choice, she got up and walked over to retrieve it herself. Then she wrote another
line.
This time, instead of passing the note, she waved the others over. The note read, here because Mrs. Sowle is coming tonight.”
