Chapter 180
Rebecca couldn’t be reached. She had really turned off her phone.
“Yaz, something came up. I have to go, I’ll treat you next time,” Vespera said, standing up in at hurry and heading for the exit.
As she walked, she pulled out her phone to check the location tracker.
After what happened last time, Rebecca had installed a GPS app on both of their phones. It was just in case they couldn’t reach each other, they’d still know where the other was.
The address showed a building downtown.
While waiting for the elevator, Vespera quickly sent Dominic a message, asking to borrow Calvert. However, a part of her wanted Dominic to go with her.
Still, he was in the middle of a business meeting with a powerful guest he’d needed Alban to arrange. How could she possibly ask him to leave for something like this?
Calvert should be okay. He seemed like the type who’d be good in a crisis. Plus, he had a pretty intimidating presence.
Yasmine came rushing out after paying the bill. “What’s going on?”
“It’s nothing…”
“Don’t lie to me, I heard Tina’s name.”
Vespera usually hated dragging people into her mess, but she knew Yasmine wouldn’t budge: Once they were in the elevator, she decided not to hide it anymore.
“Rebecca–my childhood best friend and also my lawyer–has been helping me dig up
evidence against Tina. She just called and said she found something but then hung up right away. I can’t sit still–I need to go check on her.”
“Got it. Then I’m coming with you.”
“No, you don’t have to-”
“What, just b ause she’s your childhood friend, I’m not allowed to care?” Yasmine teased, pretending to be offended.
“Fine. But when we get there, you stay in the car
“Okay. Whatever you say.”
Vespera bit her lip. She didn’t want Yasmine getting involved, but once Yasmine latched onto something, she rarely let go. Hopefully, she was just overreacting.
Before they reached the first floor, her phone rang–it was Dominic.
Chapter 120
She had texted him instead of calling, not wanting to interrupt… and he responded with a call?
Her heart softened, then she picked up. Before she could say anything, his low, serious, gentle voice came through the line, “Wait in the car. I’m coming with you.”
“Oh.” That was all Vespera said, and she sounded obedient.
With that, he hung up.
Vespera stared at her phone, feeling a strange warmth spread through her chest. She honestly didn’t know how to react… maybe she was a little shy.
Yasmine clicked her tongue beside her, thinking, “Ugh, that unmistakable stench of romance.
No wonder Vespera was catching feelings–it was only a matter of time. The poor woman didn’t even know what she was in for yet.
Outside the hotel, Calvert had already pulled the car around.
Vespera and Yasmine slid into the backseat. At this point, Vespera wasn’t even worried about who was supposed to sit where.
Dominic came out not long after. He walked straight to the front passenger seat and got in.
“Where is she?” he asked.
“Verrin Tower.” Vespera pulled up her phone and showed him the pinned location.
Dominic gave it a quick look, then told Calvert to head over. As he handed the phone back, he glanced at her. “You two track each other’s locations?”
Vespera nodded. “Yeah. Just in case we can’t get in touch, we can still find each other.”
Dominic chuckled. “That’s real friendship right there.”
She couldn’t tell if it was just her imagination, but something in his tone didn’t sound quite like a compliment.
“Yeah, it is,” Vespera replied with a smile, tucking her phone away.
Dominic hadn’t turned back around yet. He looked at her with a slightly critical expression. You’re worried your best friend might go missing… but not your boss?”
Vespera went silent.
Dominic added, “Guess I’m not that important.‘
Her silence deepened. She pressed her lips together, then finally said, “Do you want me to share my location with you?
