Drowning in Heartache 8

Chapter

The moment Kelly opened the door, memories flooded her like a tidal wave. The place was just as it had been the day they left. Even Hugh seemed affected by being back in a home they’d shared for so long

He turned to her. Kel, you remember how we-

No, I don’t remember,Kelly muttered, her head dropping

Hugh paused, then pointed to the block model in the comer. Didn’t we put this in the study after we finished it? Why is it here now

Kelly didn’t even look at it

You couldn’t see back then, so most of your memories are messed up,she said flatly

ugh loved he

Just like how Kelly had once believed Hugh loved her. But in reality, his feelings had been nothing more than an sion fueled by desperation

When he was blind, he had to rely on touch. She was like a cane, guiding him through the dark, so he mistook her for something he couldn’t live without. She no longer mattered once he got his sight back and could do whatever he wanted

She had believed their love would be strong enough to survive anything. But in the end, it was just a fleeting dream which faded without a trace

Hugh saw the flicker of loneliness cross Kelly’s face, and his chest tightened. He wanted to ask her what was wrong, but before he could say anything, she turned away and stepped out onto the bakony

The plane’s in the room at the end of the hall. You two can head on ahead,Kelly said

As their footsteps faded, Kelly sank into a rocking chair and slowly closed her eyes Before long, the bright sky outside turned dark, and light rain began to fall

she got up and walked into the living room, only to hear the sound of a plano coming from somewhere nearby. It was Liebestraum, the very first piano piece she’d ever heard

As the notes floated through the air, she was transported back to a summer when she was ten. Without even realizing it, she found herself drawn toward the music. Through the window, she saw Hugh and Natale sitting side by side at the piano, playing a duet. Their harmony was flawless even after all these years

Seven years had passed, but Hugh’s eyes still carried that same unwavering devotion whenever he looked at Natalie. So this was how deeply Hugh had loved her. He’d never gotten over her, even after she’d walked away from him for seven years

They were born into privilegethe perfect golden couplewhile Kelly was just the housekeeper’s daughter. Why was she trying to fit into a world that didn’t belong to her? Why had she fallen for someone she could never really be with

Kelly could turn back time, she never would’ve fallen for Hugh at first sight. She never would’ve cared for him in secret or spent those seven years by his side while he was blind. Gradually, the music faded into silence. At some point, Natalie’s hand slid over Hugh’s, trailing slowly up his arm Through the window, Kelly watched as Natalie rested her hand on his shoulder, her lips moving toward his

Hugh, I know you st love mar

At that point, Kelly couldn’t take it anymore. She turned around and walked away

The rain came down harder, sucking bercompletely. Her mind went blank. One second, she felt like dry grass barely hanging on to the edge of a cliff, and the next, like a boat bring thrown around by crashing waves. She was adrift, lost. Even her tears were washed away by the rain, leaving nothing behind
