Chapter 7
“Brother–in–law went to heat up some milk for you. He said you can’t drink it cold. I’m not kidding, where can you find such a good man like him?”
“The drinks aren’t all moved yet. I’ll go remind him.”
Jennifer’s eyes reddened, and her nails dug into her palm.
How many times had he lied to her before he became so skilled at it, telling lies with a straight face?
She couldn’t stay there any longer.
“I’m tired. I’ll go back first.”
“Should I have brother–in–law take you home?”
Jennifer looked at him steadily. “No need. I don’t want to ruin his mood.”
Kavis noticed the change in her expression and felt a bit guilty. “Then I’ll call a cab for you.‘
Before getting in the car, Jennifer took one last look at the brother she had raised with her own hands.
Kavis’s gaze wandered. “What’s wrong, sis?”
Jennifer withdrew her gaze, said nothing, and closed the car door.
As soon as she arrived home, Devlin called.
“Why didn’t you let me take you home? It’s so late, and you’re alone. How can I not worry?”
At the same time, she received a message from Roy.
[Did you two do it on that bed the first time? He said you’re too conservative, and that there’s nothing new after doing it a few times.]
[No wonder he’s been holding back for two days. He almost broke up
with me.]
On their wedding night, Devlin had noticed her nervousness right away.
He had taken her from their bridal suite to the Mars family home, to the familiar room.
For the first time, Devlin had held back to the extreme, still caring about her feelings.
He had been gentle, tender.
When she cried, he cried too.”
“Sis, I love you. I’ll never let you regret marrying me.”
But now, she truly regretted it.

On the phone, Devlin called her name a few more times, cautiously.
Jennifer pressed her hand tightly over her mouth, choking on her sobs, unable to say a word.
“Is there no signal? Don’t worry, brother–in–law. I called the cab, and the app shows my has made it home,” Kavis’s voice came through.
“You can go stay with Roy. I’ll send a message to my sister later.”
“Be careful. Don’t let anything slip.”
sister
Kavis laughed. “My sister can’t possibly suspect me. Besides, if she can’t have kids, should she stop others from having them?”
“Kavis!” Devlin snapped. “Don’t talk about your sister like that!”
“Okay, okay, I won’t say anything.”
The call ended.
Kavis’s message arrived as promised.
[Brother–in–law rarely comes out, so he promised to drink a few more with me. I had him stay at our place tonight. Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on things.]
Then, there was a message from Devlin.
[Wife, if you’re tired, go to bed early.]
[Kavis landed a big deal for the first time, and today I’m celebrating with him, including your share. Don’t wait up for me.]
Jennifer didn’t reply to a single word.
At that moment, the storm of emotions that had been churning inside her suddenly calmed.
She wiped away her tears.
She wouldn’t wait anymore.
People who weren’t worth it didn’t deserve her time.
That included him, and also Kavis.
She stood up, went back to her room, and left all the distress behind. She slept soundly through the night.
On their wedding anniversary.
Devlin made her a heart–shaped breakfast first thing in the morning.
“Jennifer, tonight you’ll see the fireworks I’ve prepared for you.”
Jennifer smiled faintly but didn’t speak.
“I’m heading to the office now, but I’ll watch the fireworks with you tonight.”
Just as he stood up, Jennifer took the divorce agreement she had prepared from the drawer
and pushed it toward him.
“Sign it.
