Chapter 5
Jennifer woke up late, just as Devlin was coming through the door.
“Honey, I bought your favorite steak.”
Devlin proudly pulled a takeout bag from his coat and said, “I’ve been holding it carefully on the way back. Eat it,while it’s hot.”
In the past, whenever Devlin did something wrong and made her angry, he would buy her at steak to make it up to her.
Jennifer didn’t love steak that much, but she would soften and forgive him, simply because she loved him.
But today, what was this steak for?
Was it because he spent the whole night with another woman and felt guilty?
“Honey, did you see the message I sent you earlier? When did you wake up?”
For some reason, Jennifer’s mood these past few days made Devlin feel oddly uneasy.
“I didn’t see it, I just woke up,” Jennifer said, picking up her folks. She wouldn’t neglect herself for Devlin’s sake.
Seeing that her expression was normal, Devlin finally relaxed.
“I’ll handle some work. After you finish eating, I’ll take you for a walk,” he said.
Jennifer continued eating while looking at her phone.
Roy had posted an update.
[He spoils me so much. I casually mentioned wanting steak, and he immediately went out to pack it for me.]
The steak in the photo was from the same place as the one Jennifer was holding.
Devlin, sitting across from her, let out a small laugh.
The next moment, Devlin commented on the post.
Devlin: [I’m glad you know.]
Soon after, Devlin’s mother also commented.
[It’s only right for him to spoil you. If you want something, just ask. You’re a heroine, not like someone who can’t even lay an egg.]
Devlin could see his mother’s comment as well.
Jennifer lifted her head, intending to see Devlin’s reaction, but he was smiling, his
with warmth.

Jennifer smiled faintly, then quickly found all of Devlin’s mother’s contact information and blocked her in one click.
She had been wanting to do this for a long time.
Before breakfast was even finished, Devlin received a call from his mother.
Her sharp voice pierced his eardrums. Devlin frowned and glanced at Jennifer.
“Mom says she’s sending you some medicine. Did you block her?”
“No need, I won’t take it.”
Deylin’s mother loved sending her all sorts of strange and useless medicines. They were bitter and ineffective, but Jennifer had forced herself to drink a lot of them over the years, all while being scolded by Devlin’s mother for wasting her good intentions.
“But you can’t…”
Jennifer had blocked her, but the chat history was still there.
Jennifer pushed her phone toward Devlin. The most recent message from
his mother read
[What kind of woman can’t even have children? You were pregnant before, but you couldn’t keep it. What a failure. Our family’s legacy can’t end with you.]
Jennifer had been pregnant during their first year of marriage.
At seven months, her pregnancy suddenly stopped, and she had to have an abortion.
Devlin’s mother had said similar things countless times.
But Jennifer knew Devlin tried to comfort her and said many good thing
for her sake. He
didn’t want to make things difficult for her, so she never brought it up.
This time, however, Devlin frowned.
“After all, she’s my mother. You should be a little more understanding of her.”
“I understand her, but who understands me?” Jennifer scoffed.
“Devlin, you know how heartbroken I was back then,” she continued.
“But have you ever considered that there’s a reason for a miscarriage?” Devlin sighed.
“Maybe you ate something wrong or used the wrong cosmetics…”
Jennifer’s tears fell instantly.
“Don’t cry,” Devlin quickly realized he had said the wrong thing. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it

like that.‘
When Jennifer was first pregnant, she was more careful than anyone else.
She never wore makeup, never dared to eat anything from outside, and even avoided going to places that were too far away.
When she lost the baby, her world fell apart.
During that time, Devlin never left her side, staying with her 24/7.
He repeatedly told her.
“Honey, it’s not your fault.”
“Even if we can never have children, it’s okay. All I care about is you.
For a whole month, Devlin stayed with her and helped her out of the abyss.
But now, she finally understood.
It turned out that he too thought, That the miscarriage was her fault.
