Chapter 4
Jennifer ‘s medical card was linked to Devlin’s phone number, and the notifications about her visit and medication were sent directly to his phone.
“Honey, say something, I’m going crazy here,” Devlin said anxiously.
Jennifer handed him the bag of medication.
“The doctor suggested I try a new medicine. Maybe it will increase the chances of success for
the next IVF.”
“You’re okay, that’s all that matters. You really scared me,” Devlin said, not even looking at the bag of medicine, casually placing it on the coffee table.
Jennifer let out a cold laugh.
past, whenever
In the she took any medication, Devlin would carefully read the instructions for every pill, worried about possible side effects
He always said he couldn’t bear the pain of the IVF process for her, but he had to remind himself that she was suffering for him.
But now, she handed him the abortion care medication herself, and he didn’t even glance at it..
The unfamiliar scent of perfume mixed with the smell of roses made Jennifer feel nauseous, and her stomach started to hurt as well.
She instinctively pressed her hand to her abdomen.
“Is it because of your period, is your stomach cold?” Devlin leaned over to help warm her belly.
Jennifer roughly pushed his hand away.
“The smell on you… it’s disgusting.”
Devlin sniffed and laughed.
“It’s probably the rose scent. I’ve been thinking about our five–year anniversary, afraid I wouldn’t prepare it well. I had to make several trips to the rose garden today. I’ll go take a shower and change into something else.”
But today, he clearly said he was going to the company.
Jennifer didn’t bother confronting him and simply replied flatly, “Okay.”
After Devlin left, Jennifer picked up her phone.
In the past five years, her social circle had been confined to Devlin’s, and she didn’t have a
single friend of her own.
If she were to leave, there wouldn’t be many people she needed to explain things to.
nger
Except for her younger brother, the only remaining family she had, Kavis.
But when she pulled up Kavis’s contact information, Jennifer hesitated to dial.
Kavis thought highly of Devlin as a brother–in–law, and she feared complications would arise.
Maybe it was better to wait until she was actually leaving to explain.
That night, Devlin lay next to her, gently rubbing her belly.
“Honey, I’ve already delegated work for the next couple of days. The first two days of your period are the hardest, I don’t feel comfortable leaving you alone at home.”
Jennifer casually replied, not taking the words to heart.
In the middle of the night, Jennifer was suddenly awakened by the sound of a message notification.
“I’m sorry to wake you up. There’s some work I need to finish, I’ll put my phone on silent.”
Devlin said.
“Good girl, you go back to sleep.”
Jennifer kept her eyes closed but couldn’t fall back asleep.
Devlin’s left hand continued to rub her stomach, while his right hand was busy replying to messages.
The warmth of his fingers and the occasional controlled laugh of satisfaction pierced through her like a blunt knife
“Honey?” he called softly, as though testing her.
As he wished, Jennifer didn’t respond.
Devlin pulled his hand away, tiptoed out of the room, but his voice still betrayed his impatience.
“You dare send photos like that? Just wait, tomorrow you won’t be able to get out of bed.”
After the door closed, Jennifer’s phone vibrated several times. It was a message from Roy. [Is it because you’re getting old and losing your charm? Devlin had been holding back all afternoon, and it still wasn’t enough, He even said tonight he wants to unlock new positions with me. He really doesn’t care about me, the little pregnant woman.]
[I really feel sorry for you. I’m pregnant, and Devlin’s been helping me out. But you’ve been trying to get pregnant with cold, mechanical IVF and still can’t conceive.]
In the heated bedroom, Jennifer felt a chill run through her body.
CHAUMENI
She got up, pulled out the hot water bottle, and lay back in bed.
For the past five years, she always thought she had met Devlin too late, that her remaining life was too short.
But now, with only five days left, it felt unbearably long.
