Chapter 27
Jennifer’s lips pressed into a slight line.
The elevator doors opened, and Byron took a few steps before turning back to look at her.” What’s wrong?”
Jennifer put her phone away and followed him.
Their rooms were directly opposite each other. Jennifer opened her door but didn’t go in immediately.
“Byron.”
“Do you want to come in for a bit?”
She turned around. “What I mean is, should we try being together?”
Byron froze, and in that moment, Jennifer calmed down.
Just as she was about to say something, Byron spoke first.
“Yes.”
He strode forward and closed the door behind him.
Pinning her between his body and the wall, the usually reserved Byron now looked at her with burning intensity.
“Shall we continue, Jennifer?”
His hoarse voice turned her ears red.
Her heart raced uncontrollably, but she didn’t hesitate.
“…Yes.”
Byron chuckled softly, cupping her face as he kissed her.
The kiss started light but soon turned heated and passionate, and everything spiraled out of
control.
The next morning.
Jennifer was woken by the ringing of Byron’s phone.
Half–asleep, Byron answered, quickly becoming fully alert.
The voice on the other end was audible to Jennifer -it was someone urging Byron to return
for a blind date.
“Sis, I told you before, I’m not going on blind dates.”
Chapter 27
Byron hastily ended the call, looking nervously at Jennifer.
“My family is very concerned about my marriage. They’ve arranged quite a few blind dates for me. Other than the first time, when I was tricked into going, I haven’t attended any since. Please don’t misunderstand.”
Jennifer had already regained her composure.
She believed Byron’s words.
She also believed in his unconditional affection for her.
But Jennifer wanted to be a little selfish–she didn’t want to face another version of Devlin’s
mother.
There were so many other meaningful things in life. Love wasn’t the only path to fulfillment.
“Byron, let’s not do this.”
Byron’s face turned pale.
“I’m really sorry, but you should go.” Jennifer lowered her
gaze.
“My journey is nearing its end, too.”
Silence filled the room after her words.
After a while, the door opened and closed softly.
A faint bitterness welled in Jennifer’s heart as she let out a long sigh.
She had developed feelings for him, but she loved herself more. Life was long, and she hadn’t come to this world just to keep enduring hardship.
Picking up her phone, Jennifer replied to Devlin’s mother:
[Okay.]
For the last time, she would bring this matter to a close.
Jennifer–booked a ticket to return home.
Byron left early, and Jennifer spent the last two days of her trip alone before flying back.
When her plane landed, she headed to the agreed upon restaurant.
Devlin was already there, though she didn’t know how long he had been waiting.
The moment she arrived, he stood up, staring intently at her.
“Honey…”
He was wearing the suit she had custom–made for him during their first wedding anniversary.
Chapter 27
But he had grown so gaunt that the once well–fitting suit hung loosely, unable to restore his former dignity.
Jennifer felt nothing, not even pity.
As soon as she sat across from him, he carefully handed her a bouquet of purple roses.
“I used to love purple, but not anymore.”
“Because of you.”
Jennifer took the roses and casually set them aside. Devlin’s eyes reddened.
“Honey…”
“Devlin, if you insist on calling me that, there’s no need for this conversation,” she interrupted coldly.
“…Jennifer,” Devlin’s voice trembled.
“I’ve demolished the rose garden and replanted it with purple roses. I even brought the chef from that steakhouse to open a restaurant right by the house. Anytime you want to eat, I can get it for you.”
“I’ve had the fireworks redone. This time, I’ll watch them with you.‘
Suddenly, Jennifer chuckled.
“Is this amusing to you, Devlin?”
